I am working on song using Reaper right now (Meaning, I am using a video as a guide, in Reaper).. I also just finished a video were I added music using Reaper to it.. what seems to be the problem?
Are you using the 64 bit version of Reaper? What OS are you using? Did you get the correct codec for the video? I have solutions.. 🙂

Hey Gene,
64 bit version, windows 10( and chrome) ..Aegiscorp.. is where I got the codes from( 2nd down on the list, I copied and installed these to Reaper but I am not sure if I copied the correct files or the right amount of files in to reapers system files. This is where I copied them to..
If I select media and then try to inset Video then all i get is a little blank box with “offline” written in it and nothing shows in the video window

Hi Billy
First of all it’s good to see you’re thinking about making music and videoing it. That’s great.
Secondly I use Reaper and edit in Movie Maker. I thought that’s what you did and I didn’t even realise (realize for you Americans reading) you could do video editing in Reaper. I am using Reaper version 4 and so I checked it out and I find that the video editing is already built in, but not in version 5 as I understand it. So you have to download the codecs.
Anyway back to the problem of offline. That’s Reapers way of saying ‘can’t find the file’ When I start a new project in Reaper, I load the media files I’ll need and then ‘save project as’, ticking the box ‘move media into project directory’. Then Reaper ‘knows where to find files. I don’t know if that helps or even addresses your problem but it’s my thoughts on what I do.
I shall certainly try loading video into Reaper and see if I can understand why I’d want to do that. There must be a good reason!
Good luck Billy (famous Scottish guitarist and sometime taxi driver – well I’ve heard of him here in South West France!)

Hey Martyn, good to hear from you man.
I will have a look at that way of doing things once I am finished work for the the day, being a world famous taxi driver and guitarist makes for a hard days night..
I have put my recent practise on Soundcloud if you would like to have a listen, I have started adding amps, cabinets and reverb but as yet I have not found the sound I want.
Thanks again Martyn...Billy..

Hey.. OK, the problem is you probably grabbed 32 bit codecs, when you need 64 bit codecs. The easiest solution is to install the 64 bit version of VLC media player. It has a ton of codecs as well.. All I did was just install it and every thing worked for me.
Your screen shot looks exactly like my set up.. except my DLL files say -57.. but, never less, this so far is correct.
The the issue with VLC is that when you go to the web site to get it, it only has the 32 bit version on the web site. You have to get the 64 bit version from the sites back end.
scroll down to the very bottom of the link, look for the latest version, right now that is version 2.2.6. Click that version and it will show a second page with the versions. Click the win64 link.. Now look for the Win64.exe installer. Grab that and just install it and you should be good to go. (it should say vlc-2.2.6-win64.exe)
This is by far the easiest way to fix the video issue. It also fixes an Apple issue with .MOV movie files for Windows users. Apple no longer supports QuickTime because of a computer security issue with it.
Once you are able to play the video file in Reaper, there are other things you need to do inside of Reaper to be able to render it correctly. I’ll find the video that explains all of that for you..

Hey Gene, Im sure those are the 64 codecs, Double checking and installing the correct files wont be a problem if i have installed the 32’s by mistake..
Vcl has been on my pc for years and I wasnt aware that there was a 64 edition, Yet again this is going to have to wait until I am finished work for the day or if I get a chance during lunchtime to nip home and do some downloading..
Thanks again to everyone for the input and help...Billy..

No problem, just remember, if you got your original copy of VLC from their main web site, that is the 32 bit version. I have no clue why, but, they don’t offer the 64 bit version on that page. Took me a while to figure why my set up wasn’t working and after I installed the 64 bit version it all Worked. The only caveat so far I found with this is, I can only render to .MOV files, (Apples video format). So, I never went any further as to why I can’t render to other formats. That reason is because I rather use a real video editor for video.
Reaper being an audio DAW and all, it is great when you want to add music to a video, with the video in the Reaper Project. I prefer watching along in Reaper with the video and all to help with lining up the music to were it supposed to go and all, but, then just move everything to a video editor when I want a finished version. I just make sure the length of the audio is the same as the video by inserting “silence” to make up the difference. That way, when I move to a video editor, I don’t have to guess at the syncing.
Reaper will accept the popular formats and play the video, but, like I said, for my setup, it only renders to .mov files. I found that the render is a little worse than the original video. What happens, is, you lose video quality because it is compressing the video that has already been compressed.
I will look for more info for you later on..

The curse of the drinking classes I think someone once called it lool.
I am glad to read that someone listens to my soundcloud, sometimes i use everyones playing as background music when working about the house..Sorry, I have digressed…
Did both things suggested, uploaded a 64bit VCL player and also tried Martyn’s trick of “New Project”, and guess what!?!It worked..
Thanks again to you all for your help, I think I will write out a tutorial on how to do this…

Billy,
First off your playing sounds great. Right in the groove. The audio/video also seems fine. I am kind of like you. I find recording be be an effort that sometimes gets in the way of just playing.

Ahh cool Billy, glad you have it worked out.. I probably need to fix my set up so I can render AVI.. Mine doesn’t work. I can only render to Apples .MOV format..

Hey Gene, thanks man. Only little problem I have now is I cant have the video window and the mixer showing at the same time, I take it this will be something to do with the video window parameters..

You can float the video window. I’m not at the computer to explain it. But, should be easy enough.
