My wife and I are planning another trip to the USA in September. Our destination will be Blues Highway 61 from New Orleans to St. Louis or even as far as Chicago. We have always traveled by car in the past. We have pre-booked the hotels and found the poi via the internet.

Now I was wondering if there are any tour operators who are specifically dedicated to the subject of music/blues and offer appropriate trips with historical and/or current destinations related to the blues. Whether by car, bus or boat.

Have you heard of such offers?

Many thanks in advance and best wishes from Germany

Hi Werner, I did a search for “Blues Highway 61 Tours” and several popped up from self guided car to bus or even boats from New Orleans. If you get a chance, include Memphis and/or Nashville.

I think the distances involved are too great for a decent commercial tour. Instead, I would do a self-guided tour, line San Luis mentioned. That way, if you see something interesting you can divert from the tour route and check it out. Or if you need to pee, you can just pull over at the nearest McDonalds. But you do need constant access to Google Maps. Note that the cost of cellphone service in America is over 10 times as much as here in New Zealand. For us, it’s far cheaper to just go onto roaming with our NZ server (Spark = Telecom). For us to use our roaming in America, it only costs $12 US for 3 weeks.

              Hi Werner,

The Mississippi Blues Trail has marked a lot of the important sites around the state (pretty sure their program includes places in Arkansas and Tennesee too, there are similar-looking plaques there). They offer recorded tours, which you can use to show yourself around. If you’re interested in hiring a guide, try asking them (if they don’t know of anyone, get back in touch with me; I’ll send you a friend request so we can use the messages).

Here are a couple websites related to Clarksdale.

Poke around on here, you’ll find some good info.

The guy who puts this calendar together, Roger Stolle, owns the record store. He’s another good person to talk with about tours.

I moved here last year, but aside from a few festivals and a few concerts, I haven’t been out very much—I’m recovering from all of the costs of moving as well as having some health issues that keep me from being on my feet.

Not directly related to blues history are the Mississippi River canoe tours (and Sunflower River tours) offered by Quapaw Canoe Company (they discuss blues history, but just as a part of regional history, but I would highly recommend checking them out if you’re here—I haven’t personally taken these tours yet, but I’ve looked into them, they sound really good to me).

If you’re on Facebook, I’d recommend asking this question in the Real Blues Forum.

Thank you Keith (G&L Guy) for letting me know about this question.

I’m sorry that I’m only getting back to you now. But I was traveling, in areas without decent internet, and also did not have the necessary peace and quiet to post.

Thank you very much for your information. Yes, if we do, it will probably be a trip by car. And I could well imagine that we will drive along points of the Bluestrail. But I would also like to listen to Cajun and Zydeco music on this trip. Clarksdale is a must-stop but maybe a place to avoid tourist traps. Let’s see what happens. You have given me important and interesting suggestions, I will keep you informed about that adventure.

                Again – thank you

                Werner
