I’ve long been thinking about getting a bass guitar but I have no idea what to look for and what is or isn’t important to have. I don’t want to spend a lot. Maybe up to $300 or so. I just want to use it to add some bass to some of my recordings. I like to play a variety of styles including blues, classic rock, r&b, etc. I am not a professional player…more a professional student! This is just a fun hobby for me.

Does anybody here have any suggestions for what to look for or a decent model to get?

        Thanks,

        Joe

I have 2 bass guitars. One is a full-length standard bass, and the other is a “short-scale” bass. Of the two, I much prefer playing the short scale, since it’s about the size of an electric guitar. To play my full scale, I pretty much have to stand up to hold it properly. I found that the weak point of many low price bass guitars is the bridge. Check to see that each individual string can be adjusted not only up and down, but also side to side and fore and aft. If you install nylon-wound bass strings (my favorite) you may need to put a bit more space between the strings, and raise them up a bit.

I had no idea there was a long and short scale bass. Thanks for the info and the Ibanez suggestion. I guess now I have to visit a store and try some out some time.
