Many of Carvin Audio’s guitar amplifiers come equipped with a knob labeled Presence (such as Carvin Audio’s V3M, Legacy, and Belair, to name a few). Though the exact technical details of this mysterious knob may vary, its overall purpose generally remains the same- to add edge and brightness to your guitar tone and serve as an additional tone shaping tool.

Love my presence knobs…..once I learned what it does, it is a critical component especially with amps like the fender bassman…..great article, thanks Keith.

Yup, great article.. Pay note to that last paragraph as it is a valid point when doing mixing. Meaning the range of audio that each instrument shares. With that knowledge you can actually make a particular instrument or vocal stand out, just by adjusting the frequency range with EQ’s, etc.
Don't practice till you get it right, practice till you can't get it wrong.
Thanks for that, I always wondered what Presence meant. Based on the description, it sounds like it’s kind of like half a compressor. That is, it compresses the upper frequencies only.

It would be interesting to read the theory of operation of Vox’s Top Boost amp and how they describe their Top Boost control. It seems the most useful of Presence controls that I’ve encountered
