After seeing this short BBC made-for-TV documentary about Big Bill Broonzy going to England, I thought many of you might enjoy it, as well as a quick, “they went that-a-way.” There is so much to say, and I’m not going to attempt that, I’m just going to post a couple stories and playlists (if you’re interested, there’s a playlist devoted solely to the music of Big Bill Broonzy at the bottom).
The American Folk Blues Festival toured all of Europe and England for many years, starting in 1962, and had an incalculable effect on those who heard it. It was Muddy Waters’ second or third visit—his influence deserves a greater emphasis.
Also put together by the BBC
Alexis Korner narrated this fine BBC documentary series first aired in 1979 (first 4 videos, followed by the soundtrack album in 2 parts). The BBC had produced a similar series a few years before but all the footage was lost. I think it was riddled with inaccuracies and it was probably destroyed, but that isn’t the official story.
Alexis Korner was central to the way the English rockers played the blues. His Blues Incorporated was the meeting place for many. His Bootleg Him! double album featured many, many up-and-coming rockers playing lots and lots of great U.S. blues, R&B/soul and jazz (released in 1972, it went back to 1961 for some tracks). If you find it for a reasonable price, I recommend it, These 3 playlists feature many tracks from the same period (with some overlap).
This is what the cover of Bootleg Him! looks like. The singer also plays harmonica on this “Catfish”y-type song.
This is from there too.
Another BBC documentary—about Alexis Korner directed and narrated by English rocker Tom Robinson in 1999.
You know what happened next. Please feel free to fill in the many, many, many gaps.
I hope you enjoy!
