Hey everybody wanted to see if anyone has an overall impression of these 2 companies. I want to buy my daughter a guitar for her birthday. She lives in another state so it’ll have to be shipped so I’m thinking I’d go with one of these guys. I’ve only had experience with Sweetwater, buying small accessories never a guitar. Any feedback is appreciated. By the way I’m getting her a Baby Taylor, many folks here have commented on how nice a guitar this is (I have a Big Baby which I love).

My two cents. My salesman, Josh, at Sweetwater has sold me two high end guitars in the last two years. Treated me very well. Good follow up, doesn’t spam me after the sale. Highly recommend him from personal experience. He also helped me a lot in looking around for a demo and working with my budget. I always try and support the local mom and pops, but sometimes we have to go to the big guys these days. I found Josh (no personal connection with either him or Sweetwater) to be like having someone local that cared about what I wanted and my budget. I don’t know about MF, I suspect they are good people too. These big guys know it isn’t the one sale, it’s the next one too and they all seem to be aware of it. What I like about Sweetwater is you get your own salesman and they actually do take the time to know you a bit. On my second guitar from them I sent Josh an email and a while later he got back to me with something he found. Didn’t try and sell me something just to sell me something. This personal relationship with such a big company saved me a bunch of money. I wouldn’t have what I have without him. Sorry if this sounds like a commercial.
Just my personal experience.

Tom, thanks so much for your feedback, like I mentioned I have only bought small things from Sweetwater but have also found their customer service to be excellent.

Sweetwater.
You get a personal sales person that is assigned to you. Their customer service is way better than musicians friend in my experience. Plus she will get a little pack of candy with the order. 🍬🍬🍬

I have used Sweetwater several times and their return policy is excellent. You can Evan talk a deal.
Highly recommended. -

I’ve bought 2 electrics and 2 acoustics (Taylor Baby and Taylor GS Mini) from Sweetwater. All were well-packed on arrival, and nicely set string-wise. They were good to deal with, and quick to answer any questions I had. Your daughter will love the Taylor Baby. My granddaughter has one, and has taken it to her school for 2 years where she takes guitar lessons. It’s starting to look a bit worn, but still sounds as good as ever. BTW, I did a volume comparison on all my acoustics using a high-tech acoustic mic + software, and the Taylor Baby was the loudest. Louder even than a Martin Dreadnaught. And the tone they get out of those is really incredible. Maybe your daughter will let you play it sometimes.

Thanks Steve! It was partly some of your previous comments and other members that helped me make my decision about the Baby. Also I have a Big Baby which I love playing.

I’ve bought guitars from several of the big online retailers (Sweetwater, Musicians Friend, Zzounds). Only one I had a less than favorable experience with what I got was from Zzounds. They matched the lowest advertised internet price, which was great but the guitar was a lemon.
One factor that is huge for me is when Sweetwater and/or Musicians Friend have the special financing promotions. It would be difficult to shell out $2k for a Les Paul but when you can pay $50/month interest free for 4 years, that’s a no-brainer. In this regard, Sweetwater reigns supreme. I also like their guitar showcase where you can pick your own guitar from pictures and info on their site. And yes, my salesman is pretty good and has helped me with things even though he knew it wouldn’t necessarily lead to a sale.

I have bought numerous guitars from Sweetwater and they have always been great. And if you ask them before you buy they will usually give you a bit of a discount off the price listed on the website. Some brands more than others. Ive gotten $75 off one Fender and $100 off another. I would think you might be able to get the Taylor reduced by $50 if you ask them. Nice choice of guitar as she will love it.
