I was wondering how someone knows they have moved from “Beginner” level to “Intermediate” level to “Advanced” level of skill in their playing ability? Some days I feel like a beginner, where I’m fumbling around the fretboard and nothing feels or sounds right. Some days I feel like I fit into the intermediate level, where things are working pretty well with occasional to frequent lapses in concentration which cause problems. And then there are days that everything comes together and I wonder if my skills have improved that much and maybe I may fit into the advanced category. Is there a definition for these or is it just how someone feels about their ability?
Thanks,
Steve Bonds

Welcome to the forums Steve.
There are a number of skills that we use as musicians. I know players that can’t read a note, total beginner at this skill, but they can play anything they hear and have mastered that art.
If you were to look for a teacher and they asked what level you felt you were, they might be concerned with your level of theory and technique.
I always find so many are better than me I think I will be intermediate in most skills for life lol.Gordo

LOL it depends on the day
some days I rock! some days I suck!
I guess if the days you rock out number the days you suck, the week was a success
but look out for next week lol -

I think when we are by our self and say “I did it”, we advance secretly to the next step of the unknown where our fingers and musical thoughts will take us. I suppose we can say that it is a great improvement and leave it as such.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Hi all.
Well, if I’m learning a new lick or pattern or whatever, and I get to that point where after playing it, I smile to myself and give a yes nod, then that’s it, I’ve advanced.
It’s my little success of the day, and that’s good enough :-))))))))))))))))))))))Boz.
