Hey Bwild,
Another 10 minutes and you could have had one side of an album. That was kind of a hot mess, not every note was perfect but I kind of dug it, kind of like a Neil Young guitar solo. Especially after the 7 minute mark, you really hit your stride. What the heck was going on there, was that a wawa with extreme distortion. How did you get that tone? I liked it.
John
P.S. What was the backing track, I know I’ve heard that before.-

S’up Charjo
Glad you dug it. A hot mess hah? I like that description.
The tone I kind of stumbled upon, as I normally do, then soon forget how I got there.
I was using a VOX Vt20 on a blues setting with lots of gain, tube overdrive effect and reverb, I think.-

Thanks Maradonagol, I found that on YouTube. The backing track Bwild used was called Major Sinner Blues in B minor, a version of Old Blue Jeans. Some great licks in Old Blue Jeans. Brian has never done a Billy Gibbons lesson, that would be one to borrow from.

Taking a ride with a fretboard with 6strings can be exciting!
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Hey Bwild,
Glad you didn’t take offense to the “hot mess”comment, I meant it as a compliment.I really liked that auto wah, very different sound, but then, hey, I love Jimi Hendrix.

Hi Bwild!
That was absolutely wonderful! My kind of slow blues! Very inspiring!
I am just sitting here with a late night beer, relaxing and listening to your cool vibe before bed!
Somehow it reminded me of Led Zep’s Dazed and Confused… Laid back but heavy at the same time!
Any tips on how to play like that? I would like to try!
Cheers,
Rich F.

Yo Rich,
I’m sitting in the rain with my morning coffee, feeling laid back and heavy, Berlin style. A year ago I’d never picked up a guitar in my life, now,as the cars honk their horns with impatience, I can’t put it down. Tips: well I definitely recommend a beer or two to loosen up the fingers, let go and don’t be afraid of sliding in and out of those boxes, the blues boxes. You gotta need it. I know nothing really. I’m a rank amateur at this but I think my passion for it helps me speak.

Hey Rich, I’m not an expert or anything, just been playing for a long time….stopped long ago and started again a couple of years ago…..but wanted to share one of the things I do to practice improvisation, and that is, do it. The volume of jam tracks and other tools out there today is amazing. So several times a week I pick a few jam tracks, put them through my main sound system and crank up the guitar and free form play! The other thing I do is turn on my Amazon music center and let it randomly play songs and I have to discover the key, progression etc and I play over it…..this is some of the most fun I have….I also use Brian’s tracks to play totally different themes….
There is one critical thing though, you do have to have some mastery of the basic scales and positions/boxes, not everything, but enough in a key to be able to play through a progression, and you’ll find over time that in exploring, your ear starts to learn what works. If it helps, have the actual scale in front of you while you play….
Anyway….though I’d share an experience….Enjoy!

Well Bwild, your blues solo did “delight”: I liked its slow, laid-back, slightly hard-edged vibe. I agree with Charjo that you really hit your stride from about 7:00 onward.
I’d offer just one suggestion – and that is to leave a little more space, for the listener to digest the just completed phrase, before moving on to the next.
Thanks for the inspiration; you are actually doing what I only aspire to do at this stage.

Fair Dinkham mate!!
I agree with you about the spacings. I still find that difficult. Get so carried away with myself I just cant stop. But you’re right. The spaces work to emphasise the phrases. It’s a great journey though.
Cheers for listening.

Hi Again Bwild!
Just being playing for a year? Wow, your playing is great! An inspiration!
I am going to try Sinner Blues, but in A minor pentatonic (my favourite scale). I find that the most versatile scale, sitting right in the middle of the fretboard, so that you can go up or down from pattern 1..
Good advice about practicing over a backing track…. I often play into a looper, and play over that.
I would really appreciate your comments on this: my attempt at Superstition by Stevie Wonder. I first played the riff (which is E minor pentatonic I believe) into my Looper. Then I jammed over it…
Cheers,
Rich F

Rich, what a cool song choice. I’m a fan of Stevie Wonder from way back. The looping riff sounded really nice! Thanks for sharing your arrangement!

Yeah, I want a get a looper too, reckon I’ll have some fun with that.
Regards your playing. Firstly I would say well done for putting in the hours to get the notes down.
Honestly, I think you need to loosen up a little and put some soul in to it.The best covers I’ve ever heard are the ones where the artist takes the piece and re-interprets it. Not good at dropping names but I know Nina Simone sang many covers but it really didn’t matter, she made it hers all the way. Make it yours! Give yourself room to speak. What do you want to say? That’s the way I approach my creative work generally. Imagine you’re alone in a white room with 6 different colours of paint. You can go wild, do anything.
I noticed you hit the notes very clean and straight; try to play a little more, bend the strings, practice your vibrato, give it some welly!!!
Cool.
P.S I expect the same level of honesty when I ask for criticism too. If you’re honest, you can learn a lot.
tell me to shut up, somebody stop me. I sound like I’m preaching and I hate that. Need to write a sing about it.:))

Hi Bwild!
Thanks for the great advice: I will definitely work on putting some soul into it!
On that note (excuse the pun),You may be interested in a couple of blues jams I played recently. i have been inspired by studying some Stevie Ray Vaughan licks on the Internet.
In the first one, I was using the A minor pentatonic to play a Texas Flood inspired jam (electric guitar, but unplugged). In the second one, playing in the key of E minor, this time plugged in! Both are really practice pieces with no backing track. I need to work to a backing track now…
And:
Following your great advice, I am now working on putting more welly into my playing!
Are you posting again soon?
Cheers,
Rich…

Hi again!
I mistyped the link to the second Vimeo. It should be
I am playing in ‘high’ E minor pentatonic between 12th and 14th/15th frets, then sliding down now and then to E minor pentatonic in open position: sorry, did not film it properly, I meant to show what I was doing!
Do you write songs then?
Cheers,
Rich.

Hi Bwild,
Just wondering if you had any advice on my last two jams? Any comments gratefully received. Trying to get those fast circular licks perfected!
Looking forward to more of your posts!
