Hi AMers
Here’s some Bluegrass Fun with Brian’s EP391 backing track (simple acoustic G – C – D chord progression).
Usually I skip Brian’s Bluegrass lessons due to these fast alternate pick runs.
So this month I took my time to learn some licks and runs….and really got into the mood with my Martin 000-28.
I took some ideas from EP621 and from other lessons.
It’s fun to learn and play once I had the alternate picking “under control”. And it was nice to visualize the chord changes.I am looking forward to watching your ideas.

Wow! You really nailed that one, Denise. I think all serious guitarists should at least try some bluegrass at some point in their career. My ultimate cross-picking hero is Molly Tuttle, and I’m sure you’ve heard of her. In case you haven’t, check this out and prepare to be amazed:
(FYI, she has alopecia and usually wears a wig, but lately she’s decided to “come out” from time to time)

That was excellent Diane. It sounded like you’ve been playing bluegrass for quite a while.

Hi Denise, nice picking. You should build on this to improve your Bluegrass picking. It sound good already, very clean. I just noticed that I have never tried a Bluegrass piece from Brian. I wonder why… 😅

Denise
Missed you! This sounds AMAZING. I think I am hearing some mixolydian runs along with some chromatic scales. This is MASTERCLASS, perfect tempo, very melodic and fun! I appreciate that you take time to ‘learn new licks.’ That can be quite challenging. Love the tone of the 000-28. Well done my Sista!John

Hey Denise, cool to see you breaking out the acoustic and stretching out in the Bluegrass world. I confess I have never done one of the bluegrass lessons either, and am not much of an acoustic picker. This sounded fantastic, really liked the chromatic run you through in on the low strings. Perfect background too with the leaves changing 🙂

Great blue grass rendition Denise! It looks and sounds like you’ ve mastered the alternate picking since long time and not only since a month, very fine and spotless picking! The Martin sounds great. Very enjoyable to listen to!

Don’t skip the bluegrass lessons in the future, Denise. You have the right guitar, you have the skills. And it’s so much fun (isn’t it?), when you get the alternate picking going, like you do here.
Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup is expected to take place in November 2025There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum in good time.
I look forward to meet you.

Hello Denise, sounds like you’ve been playing Bluegrass for a long time.
You got that 000-28 going.
Love your hat.
Nice background with autumn colors.
Man if there is a style I am afraid to play is Bluegrass, my old fingers can’t play at that speed, lolAndréM

Hi Denise, how great is this one!! I find those alternate picking runs to be really tough, and you flew right through them flawlessly. Some great licks and very enjoyable to hear.

Wow, Denise! Your playing is so versatile – great how you nailed this Bluegrass style. And again and again I am very impressed by – and admittedly a little bit envious of – your fantastic tone. Your Martin really chimes. Well done! 👏🏽

You’re no Billy Strings, but no slacker, either! I play a lot of bluegrass, as you know, and you have that sound (and the flatted thirds, etc.) down pat. Now you just need to find a bass player to pair up with.
You got great tone out of that guitar, though I don’t quite understand the origin of the name. … from the color?
The alternate picking style is really not that hard once you get going. But if you really want a challenge, try learning some bluegrass fiddle tunes.

Excellent performance, Denise!
Of course you picked the hardest technically genre and of course you nailed it! Yes, you definitely had those Bluegrass runs under control. I don’t believe I have ever seen you make a mistake while playing. Not that it matters because playing music is not about perfection but I can only wish I had your focus and discipline.I’m very impressed – but not surprised – with your acoustic skills, it’s nice to see you play your beautiful Martin. 🤗 🎸💕

Hi Denise your study of bluegrass has rewarded you big time , you played a feast of different licks / runs that came together so well , especially the ones at 0.20 and 1.02 to name a few .
Now you’ve dipped your toes into the bluegrass world there’s no stopping you .
Love the hat .
Great tone as well.Martin

Great performance Denise! You mixed all those ideas from different EPs in such a clever and original way! You sound like a bluegrass pro, not one skipping it, well done!
If I wasn't making mistakes I wouldn't be the kind of player I want to be. Perfection is dangerous.
It's all about taking risks, sometimes you get to some place, sometimes you get to a different place. (Brian May) -
