        Hello All-
1st, a big shoutout to Roger ( @canada-moose) — when he posted his version of Samba Pa Ti a couple of months ago, I fell in love (with the song, not with Roger!) and decided I had to learn it. My son, Craig, who was in town visiting, also liked it, and made a challenge to me. We decided to both work on the song for a month, & I agreed to post our videos on AM. So here is my version of Samba Pa Ti, followed by Craig’s. We both did a version that is pretty much note-for-note the original studio version from the Abraxas album. This song was a joy to learn & play, & I believe I’ll always keep it in my repertoire & continue to work on its endless nuances. Craig would love to hear your input on his video. This is his first time recording himself & I thought he did great, especially considering this song is far outside his metal/hard rock wheelhouse. Oh, & I also want to brag that Craig is a Captain in the US Marine Corps — we’re obviously proud of him. Thanks for reading my wordy post and taking the time to view our videos.
        Cheers,
        Gary

Gary, congratulations. That’s a great achievement and you really caught the tone, feel, great bends, tremolos, triplets, all the little Santana nuances.

I know what goes into learning to play this piece, and then learning to play it with feeling, and you accomplished all this in a very short time (I’ve been working on this piece for decades!). Really, congratulations on this great accomplishment, especially on bringing out the smooth confident relaxed flowing feeling that this piece is made for.

And congrats to your son Craig, obviously a chip off the old musical block. I was especially impressed how well he handled the blip in the backing track, just kept playing and found his way thru it. I salute you both.

If I didn’t know better, I’d think you retired and did nothing but play guitar, you sounded great, probably in part the result of having listened to the tune hundreds of times since the first, it was clear you knew the tune inside-out. Several times, I marveled at your playing.

Congratulations to both of you, taking on a challenge and excelling!

I am absolutely in the opinion of Roberto. What a joy to do with his son. Yes, you should be very proud of your son. I really enjoyed both versions. There are two great performances; Played great. Both versions on a very high level.
                Rgds, also to your son.

Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Very good song and nicely played by both of you. You both learned it very quickly, which is a feat in itself. Yet it was played smoothly, with feel as Roger mentioned. Great idea.

                      Gary,

That was great and I loved the tone on your guitar and the way you played the whole piece. Not sure how you memorized all those notes……very impressive!

                      Craig,
Man, you really played that well and I really liked it! Congratulations and I hope Gary and y’self will post some future videos so we can see some more of your playing.

Thank you for your service and be safe!

Oh man, what a treat from you two guitarists. loved both the solo pieces, totally different yet both fitting the bill.
Individual sounds from both guitars were more than enough to make each rendition stand their corners..
You two gentlemen should be very proud of yourselves,
                        wonderful…

Hey guys you have done brilliantly for a month challenge to get as good as you both have done. I too love this Santana track along with Black Magic Woman… what an Album Abraxas was / is. How did you go about getting familiar with the tune and tab? I would love to know as I would like to try and follow in your footsteps.
Great Job and a great posting.

Congratulation Gary to your son Craig for making it up the ladder in the US Marine Corps. Very well done it takes grit and will serve him well throughout his life.

John – There’s a paperback book called “In Session With Carlos Santana.” It has tabs to Samba Pa Ti & several other songs and comes with a CD with backing tracks and sample versions. It costs about $22 – I bought it on Amazon. There’s about a million versions of tabs to this song all over the internet, but this version is probably the best if you want to learn the original studio version of the song.
And thanks for your kind comments.

Awesome job by both of you. I have always wanted to play this but pretty much everything after the 2:30 mark has intimidated me. It must have taken a great deal of persistence to get it to this level. Thanks for pushing me toward the challenge.
