Difficulty playing the 💙 blues, that’s interesting you gals & guys are where I’m trying to get, I just started learning the guitar so I have to figure out which notes best express my emotion I have to learn the fretboard you all are all ready there, once I get there it’s all down hill here’s what I mean by “interesting” first off the blues isn’t something to be played, blues is that which you feel than express, & “EVERYONE” has experienced the blues, all your doing is expressing that experience/emotion through your instrument each note or group of notes speaker a word, phrase or sentence representing that emotion that note or group of notes are vivid and descriptive you can see em, the blues can’t be played,if your playing than your thinking you can think yourself out of the emotion which is equivalent to forgetting what you where going to say just hit the note or notes that best express the emotion your feeling THAT’S THE BLUES your not playing your venting purging yourself B-4 you loose your mind, I started learning the guitar 4 months ago,I’m on my way (self taught), the blues ain’t sanitized.

You “PLAY” classical music, you “PLAY” jazz because there scripted (STIFF),sit up straight kind of music, the reason why blues inspired rock is because there the same,”slouchy” of the people by the people for all the people an earthy, rootsy, on the ground or as we say “grimy” music those two types of music are emotional at there root, that’s why all or most nationalities can identify with it cause it’s snotty (running) nose & tears, everyone can identify with the description of discomfort, pain, hurt and than the rebound from those conditions, that’s what rock & roll was at it’s root I have no idea what it is now, than again yes I do, it’s fast finger solo playing fun, Thankx for you time.

Rick, I don’t know my friend. You may be right about the origin of blues music. There’s a lot of technique and theory to learning to play “blues” well and with feeling. I believe it is something you can learn to “play” just like any other genre. Jazz is another thing all together and involves a tremendous amount of scale theory and improvisation, not really scripted at all.

Charjo thankx for the exchange, you maybe correct it my take some type of theory to “PLAY” the blues, however it’s something all together different to feel & express the blues through an instrument a theory is a fact minus the fact part, the blues is in me no guess work required, once I developed my ear to recognize the notes on the fingerboard, all I have to do is close my eyes and release it, let it flow, let it come cause it’s in me deep no thought ,theory or guess work nessary.

For example, I was married 43 years than one afternoon my wife of 43 years was no more,I didn’t need someone’s theory to express that, all I need is a guitar pick and to get familiar with that finger/fret board and I’ll express what that feels like without opening my mouth, it in me.

I’m working through the pentatonics, but not from a ‘box’ standpoint. I’m following another author’s suggestion to know where the root notes are on all the strings, then play the intervals around that note. Believe me, it took all the pressure off of learning the 5 boxes and when and where to use them. Ok, maybe I’ve simplified this a bit, but to me, it’s so much easier to find the root, and know exactly where the other notes in the scale fall. Yes, the B string goofs things up, but the intervals don’t change. For me, it was an eye-opener, especially after struggling with Boxes 2 – 5.
Just my opinion.
