You make frequent comments about pattern 1, 2,4,5 are these the boxes other online teachers refer to? Are there any lessons where you talk in depth about all the patterns?

          Hi Stephen

I think that you will find the info that you’re looking for in the Lead Guitar Course

            Hi Stephen,

Ep436: The Ultimate Guide to the Pentatonic Scales will cover a lot of material in what you are looking for. Includes PDF files of the minor pentatonic patterns (the standard version and Brian’s 3 pattern version) in Key A. Attached the major version for comparison.

The pattern numbers are actually completely arbitrary and not standardized. Since not everyone uses the same conventions it can become confusing – especially for beginners.
That’s why I personally prefer to refer to them by the chord shape they are based on or the neck position they are played at.

For example, instead of talking about pattern 1 of the A minor pentatonic (as per Brian’s conventions), I’d rather talk about the A minor pentatonic based on the E shape, or the A minor pentatonic in 5th position.

Understanding the connection between a scale and a chord shape is absolutely key anyway!

                Stephen,
                I agree with J-M.
If I was going to teach a beginner I would teach everything around the octave pattern of roots, ie. show a major and minor chord in one position and teach how the major pentatonic and minor pentatonic shape fit and overlap over that major and minor chord shape. The roots and chord shapes are how you are going to ultimately navigate the fretboard.
