Hi Active Melody family!
It’s time for the September, 2025 Site Member Challenge
For this month’s challenge I want you to re-create the lead on any ActiveMelody lesson that has a jam track, but re-create it in a DIFFERENT style!
So for example, if the lesson was about a Blues lead, use that jam track and play something that sounds country, or Bluegrass, jazz, etc.
I realize that most of us are minor pentatonic players so a little Blues is always going to creep into your solo, but try to add a couple of licks from a different style just to challenge yourself.
The submission date for this challenge will be Sunday, October 19 – you can start submitting Friday, October 17
**If you need assistance with how to record yourself and post to the forum see this post**
_______________
GROUND RULES FOR PARTICIPATION:
1. Post your Youtube, Vimeo, or Soundcloud links of you playing your chosen lesson anytime between Friday, October 17, through Sunday, October 19, 10:00 pm CST. Please do not submit earlier. I think it is fun to see everyone’s posts at once.
2. Submit individually in the “Active Melody Member Challenge Response Submissions” forum. Title your posts “September 2025 Challenge Response – [Your AM Screen Name]”
3. Please submit only a single video or audio file for this challenge.
4. Have fun and don’t be intimidated by these challenges!!! Use these challenges to help you set goals and complete them by a deadline. You can also use this as an opportunity to chat with your fellow Active Melody members and share tips or tricks on this challenge that you think are useful.
5. In my opinion, it is better to show progress versus perfection with these challenges. So if you are a beginner and can only play the first couple of measures. That is completely ok. If you play two more measures of the next challenge piece than you did the previous one, you are on track to getting better. This is what these challenges are about…you learning guitar and getting better. Remember we are all here to support you no matter what your current playing level is.
I look forward to seeing everyone’s posts! 🙂

This is just a suggestion. Please when using pentatonic scales please go over the different positions. And chords as well finger wise. I have learned from you so much but still consider myself to be a novice. Thank you Brian!

Hey Peter, Brian has a number of lessons that show Pentatonic scales, and how they relate to chords. Do a search of the lessons using “CAGED”, you’ll find a lot.

Good idea! It’s too easy to just be lazy and stick with the pentatonic scale of the root chord. We probably all need practice in “playing the chords”, that is, changing the scale to match the chords.

I have completed the CAGED lessons and feel pretty confident there but the Pentatonic Scales are so important to me. I know A Minor, F#M, B, C, EM, C# pentatonic Scales from memorization. But the rest I have to look up and just wondering if there was a more effecient way to learn all the Pentatonisc Scales. Also, on the chord side, Brian introduces me to new chords such as different ways to do D chord. The Tabs don’t show on a guitar grid the fingering. First, are there lessons on the chords and can he include the tabs on the guitar grid?

If you’ve got one Pentatonic memorized you can move the shape around. Brian has lots of lessons on the pentatonics as well. And then there are some common shapes between the scales that can get you a major or minor sound depending how you apply it…once you start mixing those, it’s like a secret sauce.
