        Hi Active Melody family!

It’s March 2025 Site Member Challenge time!

Ok folks, so for this challenge I’d love to see what variety we can get from this jam track in C that is void of a 3rd! There is nothing in this that determine if the 3 chords (C, F, and G) are major or minor, so it will be up to YOU to determine that.

You can play chords, lead, harmonies, or any combination. You can also mix and match what chords you determine to be major or minor. i.e. you could have a minor 1 and 4 chord, with a major 5 chord (common) – or all 3 chords minor, all 3 chords major, they can be dominant 7 chords, major 7, 6 chords, etc etc. 🙂

Shape this however you want it to sound.

Here’s the MP3 file jam track in C

The submission date for this challenge will be Sunday, April 13 – you can start submitting Friday, April 11

**If you need assistance with how to record yourself and post to the forum see this post**

        _______________

        GROUND RULES FOR PARTICIPATION:

        1. Post your Youtube, Vimeo, or Soundcloud links of you playing your chosen lesson anytime between Friday, April 11, through Sunday, April 13, 10:00 pm CST. Please do not submit earlier. I think it is fun to see everyone’s posts at once.

        2. Submit individually in the “Active Melody Member Challenge Response Submissions” forum. Title your posts “March 2025 Challenge Response – [Your AM Screen Name]”

        3. Please submit only a single video or audio file for this challenge.

        4. Have fun and don’t be intimidated by these challenges!!! Use these challenges to help you set goals and complete them by a deadline. You can also use this as an opportunity to chat with your fellow Active Melody members and share tips or tricks on this challenge that you think are useful.

        5. In my opinion, it is better to show progress versus perfection with these challenges. So if you are a beginner and can only play the first couple of measures. That is completely ok. If you play two more measures of the next challenge piece than you did the previous one, you are on track to getting better. This is what these challenges are about…you learning guitar and getting better. Remember we are all here to support you no matter what your current playing level is.

I look forward to seeing everyone’s posts! 🙂

This sounds really fun! I’ve often pondered over the issue of chords lacking a 3rd.

Is it just me or does the track hang on the I chord way toooo long?

It is an odd chord sequence, but maybe that’s deliberate🤔

I wanted to participate on this one and I’m sure it’s just me, but I found the meter hard to count, and I kept missing the One. Tried locking in on the snare on 2&4 and still was off on the changes. There are some offbeats and counter- rhythms going on. I guess I’m just a 12/8 kind of guy. Will look forward to viewing the submissions of others.
I liked Manfred’s Telecaster composition that came up early on YouTube, today. 😊
The journey continues-let the good times roll!

                          How I missed it.
It’s such an almost hypnotic backing rhythm, I thought it was a slow tempo since I heard the snare as I later found out, only on beat 4, it skips beat 2. Usually, the kick drum is on 1&3 and the snare on 2&4. That would double the BPM to super slow the way I first heard it.

But it wasn’t until day, that I played the Mp3 backing track and lo and behold, there is a one bar intro with a stick count for the tempo faster than I thought trying to break it using the drums alone initially. I pulled out my Metronome and clocked it exactly at 110 BPM and naturally, all the changes fell into place. Solved. I guess-I didn’t take the time to pull up the stand alone Mp3 and go to the intro bar to get the click (stick) count.

I also noticed that some of the submissions today recorded a rhythm guitar and their melody line and that prompted me to go look at Brian’s initial March Challenge Page and I double check Mp3 and I heard the intro bar. Small thing, but overlooked on my part.
