Hi Active Melody family!
It’s April 2025 Site Member Challenge time!
Ok folks, for this challenge you’re going to be self-imposing a limitation of some kind. You can pick whatever style of music you want to play, original composition, ActiveMelody jam track, etc. but you have to place a pre-determined constraint on what you play.
Examples of limitations could be:
Playing a lead on just 1 string
Playing 1 position of the Pentatonic scale
Playing without using a pick (fingers only)Feel free to determine whatever limit you want, just be sure to let us know what your limitation is, either in the description of your post, in the video, or both.
The submission date for this challenge will be Sunday, May 11 – you can start submitting Friday, May 9
**If you need assistance with how to record yourself and post to the forum see this post**
_______________
GROUND RULES FOR PARTICIPATION:
1. Post your Youtube, Vimeo, or Soundcloud links of you playing your chosen lesson anytime between Friday, May 9, through Sunday, May 11, 10:00 pm CST. Please do not submit earlier. I think it is fun to see everyone’s posts at once.
2. Submit individually in the “Active Melody Member Challenge Response Submissions” forum. Title your posts “April 2025 Challenge Response – [Your AM Screen Name]”
3. Please submit only a single video or audio file for this challenge.
4. Have fun and don’t be intimidated by these challenges!!! Use these challenges to help you set goals and complete them by a deadline. You can also use this as an opportunity to chat with your fellow Active Melody members and share tips or tricks on this challenge that you think are useful.
5. In my opinion, it is better to show progress versus perfection with these challenges. So if you are a beginner and can only play the first couple of measures. That is completely ok. If you play two more measures of the next challenge piece than you did the previous one, you are on track to getting better. This is what these challenges are about…you learning guitar and getting better. Remember we are all here to support you no matter what your current playing level is.
I look forward to seeing everyone’s posts! 🙂

What a Great Idea, playing a lead on one string. What could go wrong 😊.

Very good. Right in the spirit of several such lessons. And a great way to really focus on a specific skill I want to learn or improve. I’m thinking hybrid picking and harmonized 3rds and/or 6ths. I want to get better a those. Or is that too wide and I should only choose e. g. 3rds on strings one and two?

Being in NZ, aren’t you already upside down? Or maybe us in the Nothern Hemisphere are? 🤔

There’s a magnetic pole shift due to happen any day now, where the north pole becomes the south pole. After that, those of us living in Australia and New Zealand will be the Up Over guys, and you all in the northern hemisphere will be the Down Under guys.

I can do this. Sounds like fun. Limits, boundaries can be simple but maybe not… opens up other cans of worms.

Limit myself well this will be a challenge I tend over play at times (too much noodling lol) I’m going to try my own composition using logic and use minor pentatonic and try to limit my phrasing, as for using fingers well that’s how I play lol, I would to love to learn hybrid picking though?? I’m trying but I just keep going back to my fingers 😊🇨🇦

Hi KT,
The best way to go about it is to upload your video clip to YouTube, Vimeo, or a similar web video hosting service and then simply share the link with us here in the Active Melody Member Challenge Response Submissions Forum section on the weekend starting Friday May 9th.
While this is a bit outdated, you may still benefit from watching this short tutorial if you want to know more about uploading to Youtube:
