Seasons Greetings Active Melodites,
This was definitely not under my fingers yet. I had to edit into choruses and it, naturally, involved more than a few takes. In spite of it all, I made it.
Hope you enjoy and Happy Christmas and holiday wishes to you all.
JohnP.S. Richard G has been waiting a long time to see this Martin OM-28 with an LR Baggs Anthem pick up. I dedicate this to our distinguished Richard.

Oh, the sound of that Martin, John!! The bass is so defined and yet not overdone, I loved it! If there’s a good recording trick here, I would love to know. Beautifully done, John. If you were not 100% ready, I would have never guessed.

Thank you, Jola.
This is direct by cable from the guitar into the Focusrite. The Anthem system has a piezo pick up under the bridge and an internal microphone inside the guitar near the bridge area. It has a wheel to blend the two for your desired sound. I added reverb, delay and compression in the DAW.
I think Richard G has the same pick up system in his D28 and records the same way.

Way to go, John – memorizing all that will definitely help to keep your brain at peak functionality. It’s the exact opposite of putting on a jamtrack and just noodling along doing improv. I’m loving the sound of that guitar.

Well done John,
Almost sounds like a harpsichord. Very magical and spirited. Love the 000-28. Sounds resonant as you can hear all the frequencies coming though. You have developed some nice fingerpicking chops. Be well. Happy holidays.JH

Thanks, John.
It’s an OM-28, virtually identical to the 000-28 but slightly longer scale and shorter pick guard.

Well, the wait was definitely worth it John. A beautiful cathedral sound from a beautiful guitar. I thought you dialled up a cool tone with the LR Baggs Anthem which brought out those counter bass runs superbly well.
I just knew you couldn’t keep that Martin hidden for much longer.
Best wishes

I think my last finger picking submission was for Christmas last year.

That’s some pretty impressive fingerstyle Christmas fun Jon !
Good idea to make it into multiple takes, as those pieces are hard to put all into memory.
I always prefer to record plugged in, but my piezo pickup is not great. I can see your LR Bags make a whole difference, it sounds awesome.

That was great John. Nice, clean fingerpicking for sure. And that guitar sounds superb. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Sounds great Charjo, It doesn’t sound like a Martin as I know it, but that was probably due to the processing and pickup. I don’t know. I guess I’m used to the bluegrass sound with a Martin, and this song is throwing my ear off. Well done.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Wow, this classic melody played beautifully and with a professional sound. It doesn’t get any better than this.

That tone of your OM is a dream.
Wonderfully played. I like that Chorus reverb.
Great dynamics and expression.
Your OM looks indeed like Andy’s. Is the OM made for fingerstyle playing?
You are a real tone chaser.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Andy has the Clapton version 000-28 and mine is the OM-28. They have identical body sizes that are less deep and smaller than a dreadnaught therefore they may not have quite the same bass response and volume but are more comfortable to play. The OM has a slightly longer scale length and, therefore, probably a slightly higher string tension that might favour it for strumming over the 000. The 000 may be easier for string bending. The OM also has a lighter bracing which may help with vibration of the top and slightly different tone. I think both are very suited for fingerstyle with a nice balance across the strings. John Mayer plays an OM-28 and has a signature version.

Great arrangement and rendition John! At the beginning I thought also to play an arrangement of this song in D minor position , drop D tuning, second fret capo, but yours directly in E minor standard tuning sounds definitely richer, with those harmonized licks, really beautiful.
And of course very well played with a great sound from your Martin! The Anthem pick ups they sound amazing alone in the recordings. I have the same pickups in my Gibson Dove (the SL version, no wheel but just a pinhole to regulate with a pencil) and they sound great also for recording even though recently I prefer recording with a condenser mic in front, or mixing external mic and pickups sound.Guido

Definitely on my bucket list, a good condenser mic for recording acoustic.

That was very well done, John. You are an accomplished finger style player. So, if we’re lucky, we will not have to wait until next Christmas for you to play finger style again. 😊 as mentioned above by our friends, tone was fantastic and very fitting to the tune.
Great performance! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽Bluesige Grüße

Wonderful tone, John. Loved the harmonics and the bass notes ring so clean and pure. A challenging arrangement for sure.

Marvellous performance and tone John. That LR Baggs really delivers a full tone, I’ve got some questions but I’ll put them in a PM.
I really like how that arrangement (and playing challenge!) builds with each chorus. The duplication of the melody in a higher octave in the 2nd and then the movement in the low register in the third all adding interest.
I’ve got an arrangement “Deck the Halls” in the tab pile which does a similar thing but it’s a major undertaking that I’ve so far balked at.Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Great to hear this fingerstyle playing from you John. Sounds really smooth and can tell you out a ton of work into it. Enjoy the new Martin!
Happy Holidays! 🎄
