Hello friends,
I wanted to share my new original song with you – the feedback last time I did this was so encouraging & supportive I decided to come back for more! The song lyrics are written in a narrative style – as free-flowing and unfiltered as I could managed. This is a style I’d like to nurture & do more of. Guitar wise though – I’ve been especially encouraged by Brian’s ideas on more interesting ways of playing rhythm – rather than just strumming full chords all the time. So in this song there are 2 or 3 rhythm tracks, a key one being the one where I try to ‘suggest’ the chords by playing notes from the treble end of the chords in a rhythmic manner (in this case, permutations of Am/G & F).
Plus there’s a bit of cigar-box guitar slide for a chorus motif!
I hope this is enjoyable. If it’s possible for you – I’d really appreciate a ‘like’ and/or comment in You-Tube (you can find me there in the link or by searching for Gary Wilshaw.
Very many thanks

Gary,
I enjoyed that very much. I loved the main rhythm and your vocals were rich and warm and very Knopfleresque. I have no idea what the lyrics were about but they were interesting and mysterious. My only critique is that the lead was a little too repetitive and offered the chance for more melodic interest. On the whole, I thought it was really good.

Thank you John that’s very kind of you – I’ll definitely take the Knopfler reference! Mystery is good!
Interesting point about the lead – I guess you mean in the ‘chorus’ sections. I played around with various things there – including more melody but in the end preferred a ‘less is more’ approach …. but it’s a tough call. I look upon my little song efforts (on YouTube) as experiments – each an exercise in something or other …. this one was mainly about a different (for me) approach to lyric writing, and a strong sense of groove (but I can see that could be experienced as monotonous). Thank you for your helpful feedback.Gary

Gary, I think you’ve got a great song here. I think it could be excellent with some interesting lead in those areas. Start with what you have and then use Brian’s latest lesson to build the dynamic as the song progresses.

Hi Dave & thank you very much! The cigar box guitar is on loan to me from a friend – but I do often think about making one. This one is from ‘Chickenbone John’ & is great fun to play.
Best wishes

Tone of voice fits perfectly for them lyrics. You really nailed . Nice video production, too.
Cool cactus in the background. The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Fantastic, Gary! You are really great arranger and composer and your singing is outstanding too. Your voice is reminding me somebody, Knopfler indeed, but someone else too, I can’t recall currently. Keep on doing this!

Super achievement to create this package. Your voice is somewhere between Knopfler and Leonard Cohen. I think you have found your musical truth with this style. The cigar box motif gives it that sparK and the whole arrangement fits in with your narrative beautifully.

Nice song, Gary..i like it and i think you ve done right to keep it in the way..less is more..
n nice cigar box guitar too.. i love Chickenbone John..he is a great bluesplayer..
i had the great chance to build a very simpel cigarbox guitar during a workshop over here in germany with him and his freind Hollowbelly,
it was a great inspiration for me..i think i will post about this also over there in Roberts thread..about discourage..…cause to me.. it always helps going out somewhere to find, hear, see..and feel the music where its really made..not the big live acts..
