Self thought and can jam with many songs. Zero knowledge of theory and the caged system. All I have is ears for notes and ability to learn a song using a variety of power chords and scales that I learned over the years. Looking for guidance on how to re-learn how to play without getting bored and also not go back to the old habits.

Welcome KT, I knew a lot less than you when I first joined Active Melody, and now I have become a brown-belt guitar player. Not yet a black belt, and maybe I never will be. I didn’t want to learn the CAGED stuff, but I learned it by accident just by learning some of the lessons. So here’s the thing: The number one goal of Brian’s lessons is to keep people from getting bored. Just listen to some of them, pick one you like, and dive into it. Memorize it to the point where you can play it as perfectly as you can. Then pick another one and do the same thing. Many of the older lessons are shorter and simpler than the latest ones, so you might start by picking one of those. Good luck!

Hey KT, welcome to AM! Sounds like you are off to a great beginning and ah gin the ear for tunes definitely helps.
Like Steve said, picking individual lessons and diving in is a great way to go. Over the years Brian has done mini courses outlining Caged chords or carious bits of theory. But ultimately, playing the sounds you want to play will keep you going. Each lesson Brian explains a bit of the theory behind it and how it relates.
The Blues are a great start and a foundation of so much music from jazz to rock n roll. So starting with some his 1-4-5 blues lessons wouldn’t hurt.

EP561 or similar standalone blues lessons are gold. They outline chord shapes, play through a blues progression and really get you sounding like you know what you are playing

Brian’s got a CAGED course, it’s in the drop down menu with the log out, my account, etc buttons

But as Bill and Steve mentioned, the magic and joy of AM is that the lessons are just plain fun! The theory is nested inside, in digestible bits, and you absorb it subconsciously. Poke around and just make a list of what catches your ear.

Have fun! Don’t hesitate to ask questions!
