Someone asked Brian about a John Mayer lesson. Most people associate Mayer with SRV & Jimi, but it’s his very melodic playing that appeals to me (this is, after all, Active “Melody”). Mayer’s style is very melodic, with lots of double stops, lots of call-and-response (lyric-and-guitar) and very mellow touch and tone. It’s almost like he’s singing through his guitar.

I posted this before but since there’s a request for a John Mayer lesson, and spurred by Chargo’s posting today of Mayer’s beautiful version of Magnolia, I thought I’d repost my version of Mayer’s Gravity. Mellow Sunday listening.

Hey Rodger, Mayer’s playing reminds me of early Peter Green and especially on a track called Albatross. I like that deep dark warmth of Mayer’s sound which I think you captured in your rendition of Gravity. Cheers Rodger, I will certainly be playing more of John Mayer from now on.

Roger — Well, you sure seem to have a knack for posting songs that get me all inspired. First Samba Pa Ti, and now this! Seriously, that is a really nice take on this song. It was skillfully played and captured just the right feel. Thanks for posting.
            Best,
            Gary
