Hi All,
As many members know, each year around this time, I play my (one and only gig for the year) at my brother’s Car & Bike Club Annual BBQ Event.
This is the 4th year in a row I have performed and the first time the weather has been lower than 39 Degrees Celsius (approx. 100 Degree Fahrenheit). The weather peaked at 32 Degree Celsius which I was thankful for!
I played for a couple of hours, 3 sets and 21 songs in all.
My added addition this year was a TC Helicon Harmonise Singer 2 Pedal. This pedal does not auto tune your voice, but it does automatically ‘read’ the chord you are playing and then add a harmony to your voice. It may be a 3rd above or below, a 6th above or below or a combination. This definitely added another texture to my performance and one of my family members thought I must have improved my singing by having lessons!!! Not quite.
Anyway, here are experts from:
• April Sun in Cuba
• Sweet Home Chicago
• Purple Rain
• Summer of ‘69
• Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door
• Most People I Know Think That I’m Crazy
• Tennessee Whisky
• Route 66
• Lay Down Sally
• Rocking All Over the World
• Honky Tonk WomenHope everyone is well and … all the best!
Garry
PS Grass was about 8 centimetres long (approx. 3 inches) and I needed a rubber mat on the grass to help me use the pedalboard but in the end I felt I was sinking down into the ground and sitting on the edge of a wobble chair so it was a delicate balance!!! Pleasures/Pitfalls of playing outside.

A wonderful program played and sung live in the green outdoors—that is indeed a great achievement. We should hear more of this.
Dieter
P.S. Your vocal pedal is amazing, I’ve never heard anything like it before.

Your show is getting more and more polished, Gary. It’s not easy juggling pedals and loopers while playing and singing. The addition of the the vocal harmonizer upped the showmanship. Quite a repertoire and you’ve developed a nice fingerstyle technique for rhythm and lead. Loved your rhythm in “Lay Down Sally” and the highlight is always “Honky Tonk Woman”.
Nice to see the kids barefoot and shirtless in the tall green grass. We’ve just been through a couple of weeks of as low as -20 degrees celcius, 32 sounds pretty good just about now.

Awesome work. Gary. The workload of playing lead, singing from words and changing pedals without missing a beat or a word is an achievement. The singer pedal definitely added texture for an all round vocal sound. Professional result, hope you get more gigs.

I have enjoyed your Car & Bike Club Annual BBQ Events for a few years now and they keep getting better. You seem to get more and more comfortable as the years go by. You certainly show an incredible versatility. The skill and tools you’ve accumulated have paid off well. It looks and sounds like a fun time was had by all. Kudos to you, Garry!

You’re doing better and better each time Garry, I liked the vocals and how full they sound. Really nice. Honky Tonk Women is my favorite and you performed it beautifully.

I have to say that, like everyone else, I am very impressed at how you coordinate the pedals with the rest of the song. It was cool the way you could throw in the looper for some of the Rhythm parts. You also did a great job balancing the mix. Too often the guitar drowns out the voice…not in your case 👌
For a while, I thought the background voices were coming from our TV. Completely forgot about the crowd around you.
As Chargo pointed out, your weather sounds pretty good to us living in Canada. Its been mild here in Vancouver but the East Coast has been nightmare cold this year. Looking forward to some outdoor performances like yours when our summer gets to us 😁

What a wonderful performance Garry.
It’s nothing short of impressive to get up there by yourself in front of lots of people with just a guitar and a few pedals and sing and play 21 songs pretty much flawlessly.
Highlights for me this time were Purple Rain and it was great to hear you do a bit of Status Quo.
The new back up vocal pedal was a great addition too.
Full marks all round mate you deserve it 😉

Better to be too hot than too cold. Outstanding sound and entertainment skills Gary. That vocal pedal really sounds great and that purple rain song was awesome when you utilized the pedal. So impressed. It’s hard for me to stay in my natural vocal range, but you stuck to yours perfectly.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

Great job, Garry. Love the vocal pedal addition and your timing with the looper is spot on. A twenty three song set list is really impressive.

Yeah a lot of other problems playing outside, beside the music. Well done, nice set. Hope you had time to grab a beer.

Garry,
What a well put together show, man you just owned it. That’s what I call an A LIST for your song list. Your singing was extremely good and your use of the harmonizer and looper were right on target. Really nice guitar playing, nice mix of rhythm and lead licks. You are a natural at this, calm cool and collected.
