I realise this is a bit late for the actual Challenge but hopefully just in time for Christmas.
I chose Greensleeves (composed in 1580) because it evokes the beginnings of the Renaissance and beautiful scenery. King Henry VIII of England was credited with composing this piece for Anne Boleyn but lack of provenance has refuted that accreditation, I also believe he was far too busy at the time. The original Greensleeves had Tudor lyrics, which are my personal favourite but In 1865 William Chatterton Dix rewrote the lyrics and called it ‘What Child Is This’ which instantly made it a Christmas song.
So here’s my version of this enchanting melody and I’ll leave you with a huge thankyou for your inspiring company in 2025.

Worth the wait, Richard. There is always such fluidity and economy of movement in your playing that make it a joy to watch and listen.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.John

Oh, this is one of my all time favorites – but it is truly special to hear your version played so beautifully!
In fact, I never used to think of it as a Christmas song but a traditional English song from centuries ago, just like you described. Glad you recorded and posted it for us. I added your video to the SMC consolidated post so you never missed anything 😉Btw, loved the video with the gorgeous Winter images in and out along with your playing. Very nice, Richard!
Merry Christmas!🎸JoLa

Beautifully played, Richard! I love that version very much.
To me, Greensleeves has one of the most iconic melodies of all times.
Thanks for sharing the history behind the song.

That was marvellous Richard, your timing, expression and touch were superb.
Such a timeless melody and I never knew the King Henry VIII claim, that was interesting. Enjoyed the winter pictures too. I think the temperature is due to drop for us on Christmas Day, who knows, maybe we’ll get snow as well🌨️❄️
Have a fabulous Christmas and all the best for 2026 -

Masterfully played Richard. I love these Renaissance compositions, and this one in particular is one of the best. Your brilliant rendition, with expression and a perfect timing, recreated the intriguing atmosphere with a rich and resonant tone from your Martin!
Happy Christmas to you!Guido
