Most of my breakthrough moments came a few years ago, but here’s one I recall:

Learning how to structure the sequences of third note and sixth note dyads as I progress up and down the neck was a breakthrough for me. It came about because I was noodling around trying to play melody lines using whole complete chords, and it dawned on me that I could just look at the shape of the chords and – lo and behold – there were the dyads in all their full glory! I knew I had discovered something important, because at that moment, buzzers sounded and shiny gold confetti came raining down on me! It was a moment I’ll never forget.

Great explanation Steve, and you rekindled some memories with that tune. That’s one of the earliest musical memories I have of figuring out a tune on the piano. Great rendition of it.

“I knew I had discovered something important, because at that moment, buzzers sounded and shiny gold confetti came raining down on me! It was a moment I’ll never forget.” 😀 That’s funny, Steve. Nice rendition of “Lean On Me”.

Yeah lean on me, great song.
Yep easier to play a melody with triads and harmonized 6th.

Oh wow, that’s uncanny because I seriously considered to make EXACTLY that discovery my theme this month! Just wasn’t sure how to present it which is the exact opposite of you who simply nailed it. Nice catch on the Lean On Me motif and developing it into a full multi-instrumental cover. Great, informative, and inspiring submission as always, Steve!

That’s a great one Steve. Well put. Huge lightbulb to me as well- though I’m still in the process of internalizing all the options so I don’t have to stop and think about it!

That was a great explanation and demonstration Steve. I always learn so much from you and all the other AM’ers. Cat Steven’s Peace Train and Van Morisson’s Brown Eyed Girl are a couple other songs that use dyads but I didn’t fully understand it until you just explained it so thanks for that.

Great presentation, Steve. Exactly how I do it. I also keep the other interpretation in mind of sitting in the E shape G chord, moving through a passing chord into the D shape G voicing.
Watching you play the Ukelele made me think that would be a great starter instrument for my grandson. You can work out all the scale positions starting from a root on the 4th string, learn all the diads over 2 and 3 string sets and the size is right for a little person. I could even teach him “modes”. What an evil grandpa!

When my grandkids were toddlers, I bought them each a cheap standard uke, in the “my-dog-has-fleas” tuning. They gave those a good thrashing for a couple of years, then I got them baritone ukes and they started learning chords and rhythms. Around age 5, I got them each a Taylor Baby guitar, and they transitioned into that nicely. So without even realizing it, they both learned how to play guitar.

With harmonized 3rds and 6th you can play entire songs, which is really useful. Why did noboby tell us these somple things when we learned to play the guitar. Instead we had to learn barr chords.

Nice improvising and I like the tone.

This is a great piece of information to internalize. I figured out the dyad progression when trying to play harmonies to country music. I mainly learned to play them with my second and third fingers. I also think about them as “same fret, same fret, offset frets” etc.

May all your days include showers of shiny confetti and fireworks.

I have to be honest, the concept of dyads, thirds and 6ths is gonna take some time for me to digest. Nevertheless, me thinks it’s gonna help figure out a way to develop my chord melody chops. Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated.
