I may have gone a little overboard here…
I’ve been wanting to try something like this for a while. Who knows how long I would have kept putting it off if not for meeting the challenge deadline.
For this challenge I relied heavily, believe it or not, on learnings from EP374 How to Use Modes – The Major Scale in 5 CAGED Positions
A big Thank You to my wife Dawn. She is a terrific musician and was kind enough to collaborate with me on this challenge. She not only let me borrow her bass, but also played drums and laid down a killer sax solo (which she improvised and nailed on the 1st take)! Unreal.
Thanks for taking to time to listen!

JFL, this is fantastic! A wonderful arrangement with great playing. You are a great musician, and your wife as well! Love that sax-salo. That‘s a baritone-saxophone, isn‘t it? Big compliments, that was awesome!

Overboard is good!. JFL that was top shelf man! What a wonderful collaborative effort! The solo itself was brilliant (Secret Agent Man Kinda vibe) but totally original and yours. And of course the sax-whew!! Thanks for making my day.

Absolutely kick-ass. Send this to Tarantino for use in his next movie. Every part was seamless. Dynamite guitar, too — that lead part from about 1:40 to 2:00 was just ace. Between you and your wife, that’s a helluva lot of talent!

Very, very cool – JFL. Incredibly good composition with many different elements. Honestly, I didn’t expect anything else from you.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Hola JFL
That is scary good man. You and your wife are both professional players (well, I know you were because of your previous posts). All the use of the modes and caged system in your solo is fantastic and I could not differ it from many Brian lessons in quality, simplicity and good taste.
not flattering, you know.hasta pronto

So who needs Garageband! Phew that was excellent and so saxy! Seriously though this is a bit of a ground breaker for AM Challenge submissions and sounds like a breath of fresh air. I think that you may have opened Pandora’s Box and we’re going to see a number of Carter Families emerging over the next few months!!! Absolutely superb JFL (and your missus)

Wonderful production and brilliant music to enjoy. The JFL Band is expanding and kudos to your wife and her talents. I also thought it had The Shadows meets Western sound but with the JFL touch. Can’t believe ep374 was the genesis of it all.

You are so fortunate. A good drummer and a base player who would/can play for/with you is so hard to find! You got them all under one roof. It’s so amazing you can come up with and play the melody so effortlessly. Wish I could learn to do that. Thank you for posting this. It’s awesome.

That was the best 8 minutes I have spent in a long time, yes – I had to listen to it twice in a row because once was not enough. I don’t even know where to begin, man! Everything sounded top notch professional with this super groovy vibe I just can’t get over! I want to play like that! And your wife is an accomplished musician – you would make a fantastic duo and people would pay to see you guys play on stage! I absolutely loved the solo you played, was it a natural minor scale? And then that low sounding sax coming in, just crazy cool. I didn’t even know baritone saxes existed. And she plays bass and drums, too! No wonder you’re such a gifted guitar player, the music is in the air at your house, JFL! And as if that wasn’t enough, you’re also a great video editor. Not too much ado but all in just the right places to add drama to the performance, very tasteful and somewhat witty, as well. Did I mention how much I loved this submission? It’s a #1 HIT on my charts! Where do I sign up to your fan club? 😉

March 30, 2021 at 6:38 pm #245670
Thanks Jola 😁 i’m glad you liked it! Yes, the 1st verse I played the natural E minor scale, which I learnt happens to be the same as G major. I had been messing around with Ep374 (nothing but G major in all the caged positions) so that was very helpful in manifesting the melody I was hearing in my head to the notes on the guitar. The 2nd verse was pretty much straight minor pentatonic. And for the choruses I was simply outlining the chords – Am triad, B7 arpeggio, then Em triad (Dm shape)

Excellent is the one and only word that comes to mind! Great job by your wife and yourself.
Congrats on incorporating modal playing. This has always been a bit of a mystery to me (even though I have watched the lessons multiple times). Guess I will have to try it at some point.
Once again, a true please to watch and listen to!
