Hello all. I had taken a short break from here to do a Travis Picking Course and I am almost done with that and it was pretty fun. I have learned four songs so far and have two more to go. I have learned a simple etude, Freight Train, Running From Home and am now working on Over the Rainbow. After that will be While My Guitar Gently Weeps and offhand I don’t recall the 6th song but it’s pretty bun.
But anyway here I am now working on EP321 and in the very first bar Brian does a lick where he frets the E and B strings at the 6th fret and then hammers on to the 8th on the B. For the next move Brian stretches his ring finger to the 9th fret on the B and slides it down to the 8th fret of the B string while also hitting the 6th fret of the E string. Two issues for me and im wondering if this is pretty normal. So far it’s almost impossible for me to stretch the ring finger from the 6th to the 9th fret but maybe eventually that will be possible but what never seems possible is doing that stretch and not muting the high E and letting it ring out. Not sure if that will happen. So what ive been doing I can move on is eliminating the E string and then just sliding the 9th fret to the 8th on the B.
Just curious if anyone else finds this move difficult. Brian lts it ring out perfectly.
Thanks.

Actually by paying a little closer attention to Brian I noticed that his thumb is on the back of the neck not over the top like mine was. Just making that change has made it about 70 percent easier. Not quite there yet but I think I can see light now at the end of the tunnel.

I’m using my ring finger. Took a long time, not quite there, but I can do it without any strain. My thumb is well position at an angle on the fretboard to give me a good balance for that rift. I tried it in the beginning with my pinky, but I found it too hard to do.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Cobalt , I show the way I do it fingerstyle, I can tell you timing is more important with pick or fingers ..just watch my two i’ll put the one with my fingers on the sh550 carvin one..that was my first ,,last one is a bit smoother but both were pretty close..i gave them two a showcase here last night, surprised you didn’t see? anyway, i may be throttled here on AM for showing off maybe too much for the mods,, that happens too i suppose! anyway
just go it slow, happy picking man good luck with travis coarse,, Brian knows travis too you know! lol

Thank you John. That was very good. Now that I have my thumb in the right spot it’s gotten better for me. Do you do most of you picking with your thumb and only one finger? It looked that way most of the time to me. Very good.

I will tell you from my experience playing with each each to fret like the classical players are taught.. but no doubt it is best for blues players especially to use the stronger ring finger as with most famous blues guitarists .. the pinky can’t vibratro like the ring.. pinky is too weak compared to the ring and that slide i naturally didbefore even seeing which finger Brian used
But yes USE THAT RING !get use to learning to use it ..there are trainng exercises online demonstrate but brian does explain it in some videos.. perhaps he should emphasize this more ring as opposed to the pinky for playing blues licks especially.
waych my ep321 demos , i use the ring too

I just use my pinky for all the 2nd (B) string moves. It seems plenty strong and bendy. But then, I do spend quite a lot of time in the gym working with free weights, and I think that helps to keep all your fingers strong.
