At first I was not very inspired with this challenge. As a solo “home-guitarist” I don’t spend much time on rhythm. It’s the least-developed part of my musical toolbox. That said, as I went through the process of creating a part and recording it, I learned some things. The guitar part itself, tone and effects, and the mix are all, probably equal, parts of making the music work. Yes, I could benefit from more of this type of challenge.
For the guitar part I focused on creating interest while not taking too much focus. For the same reason, I didn’t try to create variation for each cycle. I wanted to leave space for a lead or vocal part on top of everything. I typically stick with a clean acoustic tone, and that sounded OK, but just for fun I decided to play with the amp simulations in Garage Band. I landed on one called, I think, “Dreamy Texture”. It really made the whole thing come together. After some adjustment to the mix, the result feels very cohesive to my ear. I went around the cycle 3 times with only slight rhythmic variation… and kept it under 2 minutes.

Hey Michael,
That dreamy texture and your smooth rhythm phrases make a nice combination over this track. Well composed and played.James

Brilliant composition and rendition Michael: your smooth rhythm parts combined wisely with very melodic licks sounds very catchy and relaxing at the same time, with a perfect timing! Very interesting experiment with electric effects on a acoustic: in my opinion very successful, a dreamy sound that fits perfectly with the composition. Great work!

Good solid rhythm part Michael. Well thought out and excellent choice of chord voicings. The “Dreamy Texture” sounded great.

Michael, I just love the way your brain works!
Seriously, you come up with the best ideas, or at least ones that I really like. And I love simplicity, there is so much art in it. Your rhythm motif was simply wonderful and it would totally work as a great backing track. You were right about keeping the variations to a minimum. If the next challenge is to come up with a lead to our July rhythm tracks, I may have to STEAL yours!! 😉😁
And oh yeah, I LOVED that phaser effect, not only dreamy but made it sound like a top of the charts hit!🎸JoLa

Definitely cohesive Michael and the dreamy texture gave it an electric sound. (good one). Very catchy and use of creativity in your rhythm piece. It had a funky, 80s vibe thread to my ear. Music to the ears and that it should be a hit. Top notch arrangement.

What a cool funky groovy rhythm with that FX simulation! Sounds great.
Love these jazzy chords and fills inbetween. I love that chord change movement starting 0:50.
Michael, that was sooooo good.
You underestimate yourself completely.
I am amazed about your creativity .

Hi Michael, that was a really great sounding rhythm part! The dreamy texture effect fit perfectly. I also liked the chord movement around 0:50 as well as the triad you chose for the 4 chord. Great work!

Your wrist motion is so smooth and effortless. Mine isn’t, I could learn a lot from you. Great submission by the way.

Solid rhythm playing there Michael, with some cool moves in between chords I also liked the run down at 0.50 and those fills were cleverly worked in with perfect timing.
Nice choice with the effects .
The whole arrangement was subtly produced and leaves room for others layers .Martin

Wow! Bravo! This is top shelf-professional quality from the effects to the seamless execution. You pulled every melodic possibility out from these chord shapes using beautiful phrasing. I love the modulation/effect that you are using. Total 70’s vibe. Congratulations on this.John

This dreamy texture has led you in the right direction, Michael. It’s very unique, tasty, and a joy to listen to. It’s first-class work for a player who isn’t used to playing rhythm, as you say.

Thanks for explaining your approach, Michael. I always learn a lot from your posts and I always enjoy listening. This time was not different. I took me a few seconds but then I totally loved your sound setting, there was also little funky vibe to it. Very well done. 👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽

You may have underestimated your rhythm skills, Michael. This sounded totally cool to me. As you intended, there would be enough room for a solo, but it sounds great as it is. Watching your video (and others in this month’s challenge), I finally come to realize that a little more experimentation with different sounds would be wise. Therefore, I am glad you posted!

You didn’t look or sound as if you were out of your comfort zone Michael. This was top notch. The rhythm was right on the money and the little fills and half step moves between the chords added movement and anticipation for the listener’s ear. Despite the slow nature of the track you created an upbeat jazzy feel which had my toes tapping away. The vibe/modulation effect works great to broaden the sound without cluttering it too. I think effects like this work particularly well on rhythm parts.
Was that a Dminor9 you descended to for the 4 chord? sounds wonderful.-
August 11, 2025 at 2:23 pm #399278
Hi Andy, thanks! Despite the challenges, this did work out fairly well. Yes, that was a Dm9. I used a ii-V-i in minor to move to it, so Em7b5 – A7#5 – Dm9. Some nice voice-leading on the B string there, and the minor 9 is SO jazzy.
