This is very exciting and encouraging for me.Two good friends (who are also professional musicians) have joined me in a band: my guitar (and reluctant vocals) now work with a bass player and keyboardist.
We’re practicing once a week and already up to 10 songs and planning to start playing out around town soon (with a pickup drummer). Our set list focuses on great songs/solos and audience engagement.
– Born Under A Bad Sign (Albert King, great groove)
– Wind Cries Mary
– Jeff Beck’s ‘Cause We Ended as Lovers (very challenging solo and technique)
– Can’t Find My Way Home (Stevie Winwood/Clapton classic)
– Gary Moore’s Still Got the Blues
– Steppin’ Out (early Clapton burner)
– Summertime (jazzy Miles Davis version)
– Curtiss Mayfield’s People Get Ready
– Jimi’s Red House,
– and a blues shuffle like Rte 66.It’s a fun set and these guys are really helping me keep my spirits up and keep playing – we’re planning to do a “show” in the Fall! Music is Medicine!

That’s pretty cool, Moose. It’s a whole new adventure.
And it’s a very cool set list you’re working on. I wonder how many songs you will have to end up with in your set list. I heard Tom Petty say that when he first started playing in a band, they only had 3 songs in their repertoire. So they would play those 3 songs, then take a 15 minute break, then play them again. Repeat as necessary. On the other hand, I know a husband & wife duo here in New Zealand who play guitar + mandolin at small venues (and sound really great), and their repertoire – according to them, and I believe them – is around 1500 songs. Virtually any classic rock or pop or folk song you name, they can play it. And they know the words also. People like that amaze me.

Congratulations Roger, playing in a band with others is by far the best reason to get up in the morning and learn a new song/riff.
Looking forward to hearing you all.Richard

Congrats, Roger. I’m really looking forward to seeing some videos. And what a great set list – you’ll need lots of different sounds out of your guitar, so I’ll bet you’re glad you invested in that Kemper Profiler.

hey Gary, it’s the Fractal Axe Modeller I use, with million possible sounds, so I’ll have to find the best setting for each tune. The Fractal even has specific “song” settings like Gary Moore’s Still Got the Blues. Plus everything is tweakable. Now I use it straight into my computer; but there’s a whole other learning curve to use it live through a PA. Still, getting the right tones for the different players is important part of this challenge to recreate great classic guitar solos.
Here’s my Fractal setting for Jimi’s Red House – pretty close.

Hmmm. I don’t know where I got the idea you had the Kemper Profiler. Maybe I got you mixed up with Brian. No matter, the Fractal is amazing too. That Red House setting sounds great.

That’s great news Roger. I am happy for you. I really believe that you will enjoy it. Congratulations for the magnificent coincidence of having found musicians.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

it’s been so motivational – learning classic guitar solos with a backup band that knows and loves these instrumental classics. With my old age and health problems this is my last great shot at putting together the band i always wanted – a couple more practices and we’ll take it to open mics, then the plan is to do a free concert in the Fall. I’m also getting close to posting video/recordings of these solos. It’s now or never! Thanks everyone for the encouragement.
