Let’s see who can understand this. I’m not a teacher but this is how I’m understanding “Harmonized 6ths” for myself. It has opened my understanding of it. The most important thing though is to understand that there are always just two (2) patterns (diagonal and horizontal) while going up the major scale, just as Brian has taught. Also, remember to do them up the scale then back down again until they become so familiar you can do them in your sleep.
Next, do the same idea on the 2nd set (strings 2 and 4) then the 3rd set (strings 3 and 5) then the 4th set (strings 4 and 6)

The hard part is playing actual melodies, rather than just going up and down the scales. It’s easy to lose track of where you are in the pattern sequence.

For me, I think it made it easier (at least one aspect of playing lead) because once you learn those patterns you can play those double stops patterns at each chord change and that itself makes a nice little-harmonized lead. We all learn a little differently though so I also agree with what your saying.

I find it easier to think of the shapes as being within a full chord. Consider the 1st and 3rd strings. Fret 5 on the first string and fret 6 on the 3rd string are within the A major chord. Fret 7 on the 1st string and fret 7 on the 3rd string are within the B minor chord. If you are familiar with how the chords of a key harmonize, you get the sequence major, minor, minor, major, major, minor, diminished(which is minor when you are only considering the 1st and 3rd intervals- I say these intervals because a 6th is an inverted 3rd). You can start to see the other string sets when you are familiar with the CAGED shapes and you locate where the tonic starts.For practical purposes you are most interested in the 1,3 and 2,4 string sets anyway.

Exactly Charo…That was the method I used to find them. We can use the same process for finding the 3rd’s using the 5th string A shape chords.

I should add the full chord shape for stringset 1&3 is the E shape. For stringset 2&4 it’s the C shape and the “tonic” for each harmonized 6th will be on the higher string or root of the full chord shape.

Haven’t read the comments yet but I will after I post this.
And I tried to be so careful! The notes are right but the semi-tone count is wrong for the major and minor 6th’s. the minor 6 is 8 semi-tones and the major 6 is 9.

There’s one thing I have figured out when it comes to music and that is there are usually several different ways to think about the same thing. I think John is right in relating things to chord shapes. I find it very difficult to keep track of offset scales on two or more strings.The way I approach sixths is from the triad approach. To use the example in F that was on your sheet, think of an F major triad (F-A-C). If you play a first inversion triad on the highest three strings, you have A-C-F. Omit the C and you have your sixth. This would fit the E form of the Caged system, but I don’t think that way. The only thing you now have to remember is the scale on the top string, and the chord quality for that scale degree.
By the way, it seems to me you have the sixth interval inverted when you mention major sixths and minor sixths. I would think the major interval would be the nine half steps, and minor would be eight. Also not sure there is a diminished sixth interval.

That is some funny stuff, John. I couldn’t stop laughing. But on a serious note about video games. Never play them because I know I’d get soooo hooked. The only video game I ever played was when windows 98 came out. It had an unbelievably authentic pinball game that came with the OS. Yep, I got hooked. lol
