Hello, here is an oldie by Hank Williams “My Bucket`s got a hole in it” in the version by the great Tobi Walker from Homespun. The song in western swing style is in open G6 tuning (E to D, A to G). As a German, the title seems a bit strange to me. Is it simply a non-sense, or does it have some kind of meaning? Either way, I like it and hope you enjoy it.

Good tune Dieter, covered very aptly with your fingerstyle playing. It does have a meaning; when a job/task does not get done because of continual excuses or blame shifting. There was another song about a hole in the bucket in a children’s folk song that went, “There’s a hole in my bucket dear Liza dear Liza there’ s a hole in my bucket “… etc.. It has a version in German ‘Heinrich und Leise’. Liza and Henry in English.

Thank you very much for your kind comments and advice. Now I understand the meaning of the title. If you want to play this song, you can’t have a “hole in the bucket”, because it’s quite long and there are a lot of tricky licks. The original is a bit faster, but that was no longer within my capabilities. (German proverb: an old man is not a fast train). Toby Walker is probably not very well known, but is an excellent teacher, player and singer with the acoustic and bottleneck guitar. In his friendly and very intuitive teaching approach he has great similarities with our great Brian. Here is a small example.

Very nice fingerstyle, Dieter.
To me the phrase refers to constantly being bad with handling or saving money, ie. cash keeps slipping through my hands, I can’t seem to hold on to money, I don’t know where my money goes etc. It’s a typical country and blues theme, you know, probably ’cause of women and drinkin’😉.

Well played, Dieter. Flawless. My interpretation of the title is that it refers to someone who has a difficult time holding on to anything – money, love, friends, health, etc.

Thanks for sharing this oldie, Dieter: didn’t know it but it’s a great one and your finger picking versione is flawless!
About what Laurel has said, I also found this page in Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There%27s_a_Hole_in_My_Bucket
Maybe the Hank Williams song was inspired from the old traditional folk children song, that curiously seems to be born just in Germany!

Very ambitious endeavor, Dieter but your playing was superb!
It does seem like a lot of work and I love to see the thumbpicking done so well! 🙂🎸JoLa

Nice Country Fingeroickin’ Dieter. I’ve never heard that song, but I like it. I have a few Homespun Tapes somewhere by Pete Huttlinger. Really great Fingerstyle Guitarist and great instructor.

That’s some dandy finger picking Dieter. Terrific song and flawlessly played.
I’d only ever heard that phrase in reference to the song Laurel mentioned but it’s been fun picking through the comments and read other meanings. -
