In the 1960s, Höfner guitars were an affordable alternative for musicians who couldn’t afford Fender or Gibson. My first (and second) bass guitar (DM 360) was from Höfner, and for Paul McCartney, too, the price was certainly as important as the design.

The Höfner factory is only 20 kilometers from my house in a small village, which is another reason why I have a special connection to it. Nowadays, only higher-quality instruments are manufactured there, with “student guitars” being produced at several Asian locations.

The future of this traditional company is still uncertain, but I very much hope that it will be preserved in some form.
Attached are photos of my first bass and the Beatles bass in action.

Too bad. Business is brutal nowadays. The big players and Asian production seems to trample over everybody!

I remember when Walden guitars temporarily disappeared a few years back. I considered myself very fortunate to be able
to purchase one before all that. They seem to back up and running. I digress.

It’s a shame when something good simply fades away just because of globalization…

          Trust the process.

Google AI says guitar sales are not declining. But during the pandemic there was a massive uptick in guitar sales, as people took up various hobbies to avoid the boredom and isolation of lockdowns etc. Then after the pandemic the demand died back down to normal. So we were left with a large surplus of guitar inventory, because the guitar factories had geared up to produce more in response to the demand. I wonder if that’s why some guitar companies are having a hard time now days.

Sad to hear the latest news Dieter. My very first guitar was an arch-top Hofner, bought for my 15th Birthday. I absolutely loved it and of course it started me on a life-long journey playing guitar. I hope someone can save and revive the company as it holds nostalgic memories for me which go back a long way.
