Have you got any recommendations for a nice Telecaster ? I’ve looked at a few reviews and the Baja seems really popular. If anyones got a Baja could you tell me what you think about it including if you think a 50s or 60s would be the way to go. I’m open to recommendations or alternatives and was probably going to buy used.

Gary,
The Baja tele looks like a great value with the four way switch and S-1 switching option. I don’t think you could go wrong with either. The “twisted” tele neck pick up of the classic version is supposed to be more strat-like but I suspect it’s pretty subtle. For me, it always comes down to what’s the most comfortable neck shape. I would really try to play both and see what works for you.

I should add, the twisted tele pick up is the same as in my American standard tele, so that’s why I say the Baja seems like good value.

Just been to PMT in Birmingham UK and tried 50s and 60s Baja’s for feel like john suggested the 50s was really thick the 60s was better for me more like my strat, they both had glossy necks, I would prefer more of a satin, the 60s had been dropped on the floor knocking a big chunk out the bottom revealing how thick the finish was and it was thick like plastic . Glad I went to look, the search continues .

Gary if you are in the UK take a look at the Gardiner and Houlgate auction coming up this Wednesday the 12th remember it buyers premium and VAT to add on to the prices so approx add 25%. But you might just find your bargain there the catalogue is open. Here is a link including search for telecaster I hope it works ok quite a few for sale this time.

I still have tele gas. I’ve settled on the American Vintage Reissue 52 Tele. I just haven’t found the used one I’m looking for yet. I am looking for more classic Tele tones.
Good luck in your quest Gary. Can’t wait to hear your new guitar. -

I have to throw G&L’s ASAT models in this mix. When he founded G&L, Leo Fender determined to not introduce any new technology until he perfected his first to designs: the Strat & the Tele
The G&L Legacy & ASAT were the results of this efforts – several configuration available
From the G&L website
The G&L ASAT® Classic is Leo’s final word on the traditional single-cutaway bolt-on axe. Framed in a classic boxed-steel bridge, the single-coil Magnetic Field Design™ bridge pickup created by Leo Fender† delivers crisp attack with complex harmonics while individual brass saddles offer modern levels of intonation refinement. Flip to the single-coil MFD™ neck pickup and you’ll discover a delectably rich tonal palette, from round clean jazz tones to thick, gritty blues. Put ‘em together and you’ll find a whole ‘nother level of heaven.
The ASAT Classic’s hard-rock maple neck features an easy-playing satin finish, comfortable 9 1/2″ radius and Jescar 57110 medium-jumbo nickel-silver frets for silky playability. -

G&L guy ive already got the blues boy tribute model hollow body it’s a nice guitar well built no sharp fret ends A maple neck. I just can’t help myself from looking for other guitars I think I need help.
Johnstrat I’m on holiday in the Canaries this week I’ve had a quick look at the auction site

There’s a G&L ASAT tele special at a local guitar shop it’s got a factory fitted bigsby that I’m not sure about, I’ve been told they create tuning issues is it worth considering ?

Gary
I have no experience with a Bigsby but I would suggest that you read some of the online reviews for this guitar and see if its mentioned. Like any Trem unit, if a player is excessive in their use of it, it can cause issues but there are a lot of guitars that use the Bigsby and it remains popular. If there was much of an issue, it would seem that it would have been discontinued or far less guitar coming with them
I have to say that pickups that Leo Fender developed for the ASAT Special really sound sweet.

I went to have a look at the ASAT I mentioned earlier on and it had gone , so I tried a new model classic asat they had in and it was beautiful just the right weight and a lovely blue colour but well out of my price range , perhaps now they’ve recently started to stock a few major outlets in the uk, there might be some future bargains to be had. Anyway while I was there I noticed a 2012 American tele it was mint unused it’s got a comfortable scoop in the back and custom shop pick ups the same as the Baja, a urethane finish so it didn’t feel to sticky like other gloss necks and it came with all the candy inc strap in its case, anyway I’m now the proud owner of a USA Tele and its very nice.

Andertons UK have done a direct deal with g&l prices for new are down a few hundred.
On another note I like Bigsby arms a good quality one gives a different feel, one of the reasons for the Tele sound is through stringing though
