I’m not in to the offset guitars but being a G&L fanatic, this one caught my eye. The engineers and designers at G&L began thinking – what would Leo have done with the MFD pickups in a Jazzmaster type of pickup and guitar.

The Doheny was the result. For those of you in California, you may recognize that Doheny is a beach in Orange County – perfect name for a guitar similar to the Jazzmaster, used quite a bit in surf music back in the day

          Hey Keith,
That’s a cool guitar and those pickups are sweet! The Fullerton Museum is only 12 miles from my house. Leo’s radio repair shop and original fender factory are temporarily closed for covid-19 but the tour is about 10 bucks when they open up.

I do like those MFD pickups, again, the genius of Leo Fender came up with a new technology for a pickup. My S500 is a sweet sounding guitar for sure. People complain that it and the Comanche doesn’t sound like a Strat; Good reason for that – Leo didn’t design it to sound like a Strat. He’d already done that and he was moving on.
I would love to have a ASAT Special with the larger MFD pickups – maybe someday.

If you can tour the G&L factory, Leo’s desk & office has been left almost as he left on his final day of work. I think that would so cool to see that as well the Museum, Leo’s repair shop and original Fender factory that you mentioned

Leo was such a great mind that gave us more than we realize, his original amp designs has stood the test of time as well as much of his designs of guitars
He came home from work one day in March of 1991, told his wife that he’d given everything that he could to the music world – he passed that night. That’s the way to leave this world, completing what you were meant to accomplish.

G&L guitars are fine guitars. I got to try out one made in Korea. It was about 500 bucks. I think it was the S500 with a maple neck. Not sure sure if G&L guitars are still made in Korea these days though.

The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete

It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete
