This is by far that iconic “in the garage” jam style. Can’t say how many times I have done this kind of jam with friends over the years.
This is based on Brian’s EP058 and I hope I made it a little more yummy.. 😉

I’m a little more partial to perch, walleye, or bluegill myself… But I’m also from Wisconsin, the land of the Friday night fish fry!

Came together really well. The mix in the middle section is especially nice.
Could you explain how you went about producing/recording it? How many tracks, guitar parts, other instruments, etc…

Terrific arrangement. The two guitar parts worked great together. I always marvel at the amazing guitar tones you come up with. Loved all the technique in your licks, the attack, staccato notes, the vibrato, the double stops….really great Gene.
I think I had a small heart attack just looking at your food selection, though.

Great. I knew nothing of EP058, but recognized to your game immediately, the Hendrix influence. Cool Version from you.

Wow, you’ve created a very interesting blues instrumental here. It’s a nice blend of a modern sound with a throw back to old school blues. Excellent job on this. I’ll assume you’re going to put this into an album of work?

Haha Billy I am working on something for here.. won’t be a video or anything..
Thanks Brian and everyone..
@Brian At one point, probably about a month or so ago, I was thinking about doing a published CD. This is no longer the case. It seems to be really expensive to get started, in the thousands of dollars. It can be done cheaper, but, you have to convince a publisher to take the financial risk. Unless they make an offer, chances are it won’t happen. So, I am no longer pursuing that.@Duffy I am working on a break down of what I did on this.. bear with me, lol, it got complicated. It has worked out so far to 23 tracks total.. (not all listed here for the math of it, but..) 4 different guitar tones and tracks, 6 drums tracks, 3 bass, 2 keyboard tracks, 1 FX track, a couple of side chain tracks, not counting the folder master track for the drums and the actual master track.
the whole project took about 3 weeks to complete.
I also have to thank Roberto for his valued feed back on the the mix. thanks man!
Also @Charjo never had a medical opinion like that before,.. lol.. good call..
@Mark O Yea, we consume a lot of seafood here.. I tried leaving once, but, the food brought me back.. lolJust also want to say to new people here, take from this as an example of what you can do. Everything done in this, and probably everything I have posted here, came from this site. I am only here for a year, but, I am still learning new things too. I am just saying, it is great resource. Please don’t be intimidated by this and not post your accomplishments. We do want to hear it!

@bluGenes
Hey Gene, I do think this is a milestone kind of recording project for AM…I dont want to put you on the hook, but doing a video of how you did this would be killer for everyone. I think many of us, me included, struggle with having a replicable process, not easy, but repeatable. I loved Bryce’s video where he showed how to record yourself, or Brian’s how he does the lessons….but this is a next step up in complexity….how about it…I’ll help…

All discussions of seafood aside, your recording was one of the best productions I’ve heard here- very professional sounding. I agree with Roberto- while I feel I can hold my own with home recording, everything I’ve done to date has been what I’ve learned on the fly. Most of it is me playing my own instrument parts, with the exception of drums. I’ve never delved in effects or probably half of what you did (23 tracks?!? Holy buckets!). I can understand that an explanation of how you did it all would more than likely he time consuming in itself but you’d really be doing a huge contribution to the site here- no pressure 😉

well, hmmmm… lol, no, no pressure there at all.. lol
I mean I could do it, but, one of the biggest problems is a lot of it is DAW specific. I use Reaper now and I am not looking back.. hehehe So, yea, I could do that and all, but, it took me several weeks of tutorials just on Reaper alone to get up to speed.
The project became quite complicated and to do what I did, you need to know your DAW pretty well. As an example, I used MT Power Drummer for the drums (a free drum VST). OK and dandy and all, but, not really, because there is gotcha.. I used multi channel tracks. Which means the audio from the drum midi track splits to each drum on it’s own recording track. And from that I send to side channel tracks for some signal processing. Sounds cool, and it is, but, how does your DAW do that? I won’t know how to explain that..
And this is the gotcha part.. I also use Windows 10. But, you also need either an ASIO compliant sound card, or a Windows compliant WDM card (most come with one in new PC’s anyways), but, you need to be able “fool” your DAW software into thinking you have an ASIO card by using a audio driver (ANSI4ALL).. You need this driver just to get MT Power Drummer to work. (and a LOT of VST’s)..
I have no clue on how Apple handles ASIO, either, but, there is an Apple version of Reaper..
I mean, the quality that this DAW delivers is blow away for me. I am also finding out that a LOT of people that use Pro Tools, which is a pretty much is the “pro” studio standard, have switched to this software. At $60 bucks US, you can’t beat this.
So, with that, I mean, I could walk through the process of the song and all, but, you would be on your own trying to replicate what I do. Everything I did, pretty much came learning and watching the tutorials on using Reaper.
The actual song came from ideas that I picked up here.. (Like a quote from one of Brian’s lessons “All I did was play notes out of the chord”.. lol, that was so simple, yet is so powerful of a light bulb moment for me)
Don’t misunderstand, I am not trying to discourage the idea, just trying to explain how I got there..

@blugenes
Gene, it’s the process that counts….the DAW’s and operating systems need to be a black box….up to us to find the similar functions in garageband, pro, or whatever….windows or mac, my problem…..I think what people would like to learn is how did layers, timing, mixing, etc…..

Looking forward to it. I’m also interested in what your studio setup is outside of your computer and DAW. Do you have sound deadening qualities in your studio? Do you play directly into your interface or do you mic your amp? Etc. What really intrigued me about your recording was how clean and clear in was. Tough to describe… all I can say is it is a level that I haven’t achieved yet. Could be the DAW itself, I suppose. The program I use is definitely an entry-level product but it still has more features than I could possibly have the time to learn how to use.
I definitely will appreciate anything you come back with… This sort of thing intrigues me almost as much as playing guitar itself!

well, unfortunately I found out that I can’t do a video. It seems that because I need ASIO for the DAW and the VST’s, it will not allow me to record audio while I work in the DAW. This is because the ASIO driver bypasses the Windows audio driver completely while I am using the DAW. (When you are not in the DAW, it uses Window’s audio, the choice is automatic)
I would have to purchase a special driver that would split ASIO and Windows audio. There is one available for this purpose, but, I can’t justify the cost for this.
So.. I can put together a post on what I did..with screen shots, etc..
And @Mark O I am using a spare bedroom in my house.. No need for any sound dampening and all.. The amp has a USB port that I connect to my PC. When I record, I have a 3.5 mm male to male cable from the headphone jack on my PC that goes into an AUX IN on my amp. Then I plug my iPhone ear buds into the amp’s headphone jack using a splitter Y cable (It separates the mic and audio on the ear buds). So, I hear the audio from the PC through my guitar amp. You HAVE to use this setup to record anyways. This is because the AMP itself uses MIDI for recording. What happens is, the DAW sends a signal to the AMP saying it is recording, which the amp would shut off the speaker for the amp. So, you need headphones to hear..
(The amp is a Peavey Vyper I, I think it was bought at around $100 bucks new, maybe a little more)This works great for me as I can play any time I want. Sometimes I am up at 4 am practicing or recording. This setup is also certified %100 wife approved 2 thumbs up.
The reason the recordings sound so good is the DAW. Just that simple..

Besides the out of site playing and production, my two favorite parts were “in the garage band style” and how times you’ve done this kind of jam over the years.
One thing I know for sure, I’m stickin’ to this site.

Wow Gene! This is, like John (@charjo) said, a great arrangement indeed! You really made for about 90% a complete new piece, and your performance was superb. Enjoyed this a lot!
