Hello ALL. I use Reaper DAW with a Focusrite sound card and Windows 10. During playback the sound often stops. If I turn the volume up to full on the sound card, the audio comes back. It also comes back if I unplug the output cord from the back and plug it back in. Easy to solve but very annoying. Would anyone know of a permanent solution? PS – I’m a relatively new member and this is my first post …please pardon me if I’ve broken any conventions.

          Hi Robin,
I too have a Focusrite that occasionally becomes unconnected. In my case the USB connection from Focusrite to my PC is the vulnerable one and needs to be firmly secure.
You can always check (using Ableton DAW) whether the connection is good by selecting ‘Options/Preferences’ and under ‘Driver Type’ make sure ASIO is selected.
I’m not sure how to check the Driver Type using Reaper but it’s probably similar.

Hi Robin, and welcome. Your post is just fine, and you should feel free to ask anything or comment as much as you like on this forum. We are all nice people.

To clarify, your Focusrite (probably a Scarlett 2i2) is an audio interface, not a sound card. The soundcard is inside your actual computer, and they are a notorious problem for people recording music on a PC. Not so much for Macs.

I have several Focusrite audio interfaces (Scarlett 2i2, and larger), and they have all worked perfectly for years. The 2i2 is powered by your USB cable, but the larger ones (like the 4i8) have a separate power plug. My guess is your sound issue may not be related to your Scarlett interface, but is due to the actual soundcard or settings in your computer.

Another possibility: What speakers are you using? Do you have studio monitors plugged into the back of your Scarlett? Or do you have speakers plugged directly into your computer? Like Richard said, you have to teach your computer where to output your sound. Years ago I tried using Reaper, and I recall that setup process being not so user friendly. But a bit of Googling might help to clarify it.

Wait a minute. Back up here Steve. Don’t tell everyone we are nice people. How can I pretend I’m a badass if they think I’m a nice guy? Jokes aside, I fully agree with you. Having built many a pc in my day, I have found pc sound cards can be picky. I do prefer the open source aspect of a pc and android phone over the iPhone and Mac, but there is no doubting how well the Apple stuff works, especially along with other Apple stuff. I prefer my wife use Apple so I don’t have to always fix it for her.

Thank you both! Much appreciated. Richard, I do know where to check the driver type in Reaper and will have a look at that. I don’t know the name of the other person replying …this is a 2i2 USB powered. I do have monitor speakers plugged into the box and I will check all of the settings. I do like using Reaper, but you’re right, it was difficult to set up.

You’ve both spawned several ideas. Again, thanks very much!

I use Audacity with my Focusrite its written in C/C++ and is a lot more efficient as well as being Lite

Reaper is written in JAVA and while an excellent tool is resource heavy and has a ton of stuff running that I don’t use

One other issue I changed my hard drive to an SSD in windows 10 the drivers are updated to use your SSD as virtual memory I’m pretty sure it doesn’t do the memory swaps it used to in windows 7 as when I upgraded to 10 all my video / audio apps were considerably faster.

If your getting drop outs I’d look at memory and storage I’d also add Samsung provide a software tool free of charge for samsung ssd drives to clone your C drive you just need the appropriate usb cable
