Hi All,
I recorded this one a couple of weeks ago then realised that I had joined AM around this time 5 years ago during the COVID period. I checked my first post which was the May Challenge 2020: EP354 Drop D Lesson. The date was: May 29, 2020 so I thought I’d post EP567 – Gospel Blues on the same date (a kind of 5th Year Anniversary Post).
I must say that looking back, discovering Brian and the whole AM experience has been amazing for me. I’ve connected with many of you around the world, been inspired by your playing, improved my own skills, improved my recording knowledge (I had none) and added to my guitar collection!
Anyway, here is my version of EP567 – Gospel Blues. I play Brian’s original first and then at the 0.55-minute mark I add my own cycle. My cycle is not improvised. I always learn Brian’s first, analyse it then practise improvising over the chord progression and jot down the tab as I come up with ideas.
Hope everyone is well.
Garry

Wonderful Garry! Your improv was great. The video was top notch too…multiple camera angles were a fine additional touch.

Happy anniversary, Gary.
It’s been a pleasure watching your progress in technique, feel and composition over the years. Not to mention your inspirational courage to venture out and play live.
Your tone, feel and timing here is exceptional and your composition was terrific.

Excellent work Garry! 👌.
Your own composed part sounds as good as the original and i always enjoy your posts immensely.
You have been with AM about the same amount of time as me. (I started around March 2020). My experience has been much the same as yours and a great learning experience.
Love that Jazzmaster by the way. That would be my go to guitar if I didn’t have four already 😁.

Happy anniversary Garry! Like you, I joined AM during COVID.
Your rendition of EP 567 is sweet and smooth, and flawlessly played. Perfect tone for this. I prefer your improv over the original. Well done, as always!

Hi Garry, we have been AM members for about the same time! I also subscribed in May 2025. It was the time, Brian got many new subscribers😷.
This is one of my favourite lessons! I love these double stops and sweet slides and🤠 bends.
Wonderfully and smoothly played. Your own thoughtful ideas blended soooo well.Like you I knew almost nothing when I restarted to play 🎸 5 years ago. Your huge progress during this time has aways amazed and motivated me.
Congratulations and all the best.

Beautiful rendition Garry, and your own second part is just as good as the first one, if not better! Congratulations on your five years in AM. I also joined in the same year and I remember well that my very first collaboration was with you and Liam (“Pirates of the seven seas” 😅): very good memories!

Great take on this lesson, Gary. Your musical talent has flourished over the last five years. I really liked your cover of “It Don’t Come Easy”, and playing an instrument never is, but you know your way around the guitar. 🎸

Congratulations on that half decade anniversary Garry! Hard to believe COVID was 5 years ago! Great way to celebrate it with this gospel blues played with panache 👏. Perfectly played with oodles of soul. I especially liked your additions which had a very slightly different feel that contrasted nicely with Brians and felt like a new chapter in the story. I think that must be your own sound shining through there.
P.S. Was that Mark Knopfler peaking out of your T-shirt over the Jazzmaster? Probably me just seeing what I want to see as he’s one of my favourite players 😀🎸!

Wonderful performance Garry.
I have definitely heard this lesson before and I may have even had a go at it myself at some point.
I don’t think I’ve seen that Jazzmaster of yours it’s a real beauty and sounds awesome.
I think I joined AM almost exactly the same time as you and, like you, I knew almost nothing about recording and could barely get through a guitar solo.
Your progress has been very inspiring to watch and even more impressive was the live solo gigs you do at the biker bbq – a huge achievement and very enjoyable to watch.
And of course your great contributions to the original songs I wrote a while back – I may have to re post one or two of them!
All the best mate.
Liam.
