I am pretty sure this is not one of Brian’s more popular lessons but I have probably got more out of this lesson than most of the others. These are some of the things I got out of this.
– More confidence playing 1,4,5 progressions in any key.
– If you play the 6th on the major chord it becomes it’s relative minor – pow! “Lightbulb Moment” right there for me 🙂
– Retrofitting scale with the chords so one can throw little melodies in with the chord progression. Just working to get better at that. This lesson was in the key of G but there are backing tracks for a bunch of other keys. It was relatively easy for me to translate G to A or B but other keys got a whole lot more challenging. I came up with completely my own ‘restful lounge music’ thing in the key of D below:
I always play the original lesson verbatim too because I learn a lot from doing that as well:

So this is what you’ve been up to! Very nice. I liked your version in the key of D best. It just sounded so relaxed and vibe-full!!! I did notice you stood up for Brian’s original version which I think is the first time I’ve seen you do that. I like to do that sometimes because it’s always a little different to play that way.
Anyway, they both sounded great but I liked the Key of D most!

Hi Joe, now you know 🙂 Truth is I am always working on multiple things at any given time. Just the way I am, I get bored if I focus exclusively on one thing all the time – we are all different that way I know. In addition to the Melissa song we are working on, I am also working on a classical duet because the classical and flamenco are parallel streams for me.
Generally, I prefer to play sitting down but it relieves the back if I do it standing. Thanks for giving this a listen 🙂

Well done on both recordings. I agree with you on getting the most out of this lesson. I am working my way through all of them that are related to triads, there are quite a few. I find that it really expands my vocabulary and gives me more creative options.

Geoff,
Very haunting guitar sounds. I really liked the 2nd demo, very mesmerizing. I think that Guild stands up so well every time you use it. Makes me wish I still had my old Starfire.

That Guild is a great guitar for anything jazzy or when you want to throw in a lot of overdrive.

I enjoyed both of these, Geoff. I prefer the second one – the tone and vibe are cleaner, but the haunting quality of the first one is also impressive. Well done, as always.

Thanks David, the second one is Brian’s version so I fully expect it to be better than anything I can come up with.

Great playing on both these Geoff. You played the lesson material perfectly, smooth and relaxed, but I enjoyed your exploration in D the most, it was fascinating to see how you applied the material to come up with a different darker feel and sound. If you’ve not found it yet check out EP399 I found that triad lesson helped me a lot too.

Oh yes, thanks for the heads up on that one Andy. I have been working through EP498 which is a collection of theory lessons on everything from scale patterns through to triads. This EP399 is part of that series.

Thanks Helen, poor attempts at composition aside, it was a very worthwhile attempt 🙂 Give this lesson a go if you get the opportunity – there is so much to learn from this one.

Kudos for delving into improvising in different keys Geoff. Loved your impro in D, you created a good mix of triads and single lines. Definitely a relaxed, cool vibe emanating from your playing. You play Brian’s original oh so well also. I’m not familiar with this one but you play it with a lot of expression. Keep on pickin’ and all the best! 🥸🎸🥸
