Hi!
I’m getting ready to record EP354 – here goes just the intro, as a quick check on recording my acoustic guitar. I think it sounds awesome on headphones, what do you think?

Hi Jaime, before making a judgement It would be helpful to know what method you intend to use for recording and what equipment you aim use etc.

A tinny sound is what I’m picking on my phone, doesn’t seem to be any bass in your e, A,d strings, kinda like how a spaghetti western track sounds, if that makes any sense…

Are you miking the guitar? Sounds like you are. I agree with Billy, a little tinny sounding to me. Maybe you could dial in more mid-range. My two cents.

What billy said – even as I’m hearing it on my Bose speakers. I have the same problem recording my acoustic guitars: can’t get that nice deep resonant bass coming through. I notice that Jola’s acoustic guitar sounds really awesome, and she says it’s due to the Fishman (?) pickups she installed. The best sounding acoustic guitars I’ve seen lately on Youtube have some kind of round pickup that totally covers the inside of the hole. I have no idea what it is. Since I don’t have any fancy pickups, so far the best option I’ve found for getting good sound is to mic my guitar using a condenser mic, then feed it straight into my DAW. Sometimes I use the DAW’s equalizer to tweak the sound, depending on whether I want it warm vs bright.

Thank you, Steve 😊 The pickups I have on my Alvarez MPA70 are actually LR Baggs Anthem SL. You can hear them in this video from last year.

Forgot all about this Drop D lesson 🙂 Too bad it’s fingerstyle. But your guitar sounds pretty much like I would like to have it. Did you just stick it the interface and left it as it were or did you tweak it somehow?

Same here, Steve. What I want from a Drop D tuning is a dark voluminous sound. Since I have an acoustic now with a sophisticated sound pick-up (that’s what Yamaha says and I believe them), my recordings have been underwhelmingvso far. I also got my condenser mic out yesterday and despite experimenting with the angle and distance of guitar soundhole to mic, the recording doesn’t even come close to how it actually sounds. Worse, my cheap Harley Benton sounds even better miced up!

Hey thanks folks for the feedback!
This is my first attempt at recording the acoustic guitar. It’s a Taylor 114ce, that has a kind of piezo called Expression System 2. I’m plugging it through a mic / cab simulator pedal called Mooer Radar, where I load a IR simulation that is supposed to emulate a Taylor 814.
Now that I hear it again, I see you’re right that it’s a bit tinny. This may also be due to post-processing in Reaper, maybe I went too far with the EQ and reverb.
I’ll keep testing with all this feedback in mind, thanks!

Wow, now that’s a much fuller sound than mine, JoLa! Will take your video as a reference on my next attempts.

OK I tried recording the acoustic guitar again – this time without any added effects, and with better EQ to boost bass and mid frequencies. Does it sound better this time?

Still sounds harsh to me compare it to Brian’s miked acoustic, though does sound better than some piezo pickups I’ve heard.

Thanks for the feedback Vorocnan! I think I’m on the right track, next attempt will be actually miking the guitar, and probably recording it through line and mic at the same time, let’s see how it goes!

…and here is my 3rd test! This time I miked the guitar, even if it’s a standard microphone intended for voice recording, I think it made quite a difference, what do you think compared with the previous recordings?
I used Reaper, recording two simultaneous tracks – one for pickup line input, the other one for the mic. Then I boosted low and mid frequencies.

This last one sounded best to me yet.
