I have been working on this lesson for a while, one of my favorite lessons, EP222. A few issues with timing here and there I know, but here goes, I hope you like it !
Rig Rundown:
– ’96 Fender Stratocaster, Mexican.
– Boss CS-3 compressor
– Boss BD-2 Blues Driver
– Fender Champion 20 amp
– recorded via FocusRite Scarlett 2i2/Peter

Excellent job on a pretty melody. I’d say you probably have that one nailed down 99%. Once you start playing it without the recording button and for yourself it’ll flow seamlessly and become your own. Well done!

Man that was great! Thanks to hearing you, I think my next lesson to learn is EP222.

Real nice, Peter! Great recording you put together there. I also have a Fender Champion 20 amp and am thinking about getting a FocusRite Scarlett 2i2 or Solo. I am assuming your guitar is plugged into the amp and then the amp plugged into the Scarlett. Do you just do this via the headphone out on the amp? Just curious because I am probably going to end up with this exact same setup (minus the pedals for now). Anyway, great playing and great recording! Awesome sound.

Hi David, thanks for your comments.
Yes, the headphone output of the amp is plugged into the Scarlett.
I have a few remarks for you about the Scarlett 2i2:
– It is really acting as a high-end PC soundcard, I used a regular soundcard (like on motherboard) before, this is a lot better
– However, I had to make a special cable, as the inputs on the Scarlett are balanced. I purchased an XLR to jack cable but it did not work, as the two balanced inputs ended up being shorted together = no output !
– The big nice looking volume knob on the Scarlett is useless unless you hook up monitor speakers
– I use the amp to get effects like reverb. You can also get that by plugging your guitar directly into the Scarlett and use software for effects
– I have not tried the software that comes with it, it does a lot of stuff, and I haven’t had the time to learn it.
– I use the headphone output of the Scarlett (for headphones 🙂 ) that way I can hear myself and Brian’s backing track while recording (using Audacity)Hope this helps, have fun !

Thanks, Peter. That is great information! I was just looking at images of the 2i2 and the Solo, and it looks like with the solo you can just plug a typical guitar cable into the input, where as the 2i2 seems to have some other type of input connections that I dont think I’m familiar with. Wonder with the Solo if you could just run a guitar cable from the amps headphone output with a 3.5 mm adaptor into the guitar input on the Solo. Although at times I would probably just plug my guitar straight into it, I do like the idea of being able to still run it through the amp as well. Thank you for the info on this!

Hi David,
The 2i2 has a combined XLR/Jack input, so you can plug your guitar 1/4″ cable directly into it. If you do, set set switch to INST (Instrument, for a high gain setting). If you plug the amp in, set it to LINE for a lower gain setting. Don’t let my cable issues deter you, the 2i2 is a great little device, more flexible than the Solo. I got the bundle that includes headset and microphone. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

Nice one Peter, I really enjoyed that. I can tell there’s a lot of work behind that super smooth submission, congratulations.

Hey Peter, played great. I think you love this lesson, because you played the track very convincingly so with a good level of feeling. Well done!
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

You play that really well, and the recording is very clean. Your love for the lesson shines through, and I think you did a terrific job.
For my taste, the guitar tone is a little bit over processed. I’m not sure exactly how, but something between the compressor and the drive is it sound a little synthesized. Maybe I’m wrong.
