John — Spotless! This is my new Brian favorite and I can’t imagine how it could be played any better. Loved it.

John, you beat me to it, and with a flawless performance, with feeling and flow and beautiful tone. I heard your version just before I posted mine, and almost didn’t post.(Instead, I’ll call it a First Take.)
Congrats, John, you’ve really reached a new level. Very inspirational, and humbling.

John,
Beautiful song, beautifully played.
I hope to be able to play it that well someday. Give me about three years my friend, okay.

Very pleasant melody with a good sound played great. I think I know what you’ve done, would just like to have a video to learn.
WilfriedPlay guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Wilfried,
The primary focus for me is always tone and audio quality. The video aspect is always a bit tedious and time consuming with the uploading, synchronizing and editing. I tend to reserve it for challenges. I haven’t done anything too differently from Brian, although my fingerings may be slightly different. Even my vibrato has come to resemble Brian’s in many ways. I’ll probably have his mannerisms soon, too!

Billy,
I’ve got four different electric guitars and you know the sound of my strat.

Just perfect, John. Really really beautiful. May I suggest that you mention the gear you were using when you post soundfiles? I don’t know how Billy knew you were playing the Strat, I was picturing you with the ES335. Just an idea, and please ignore if I overlooked that info somewhere. Again, congrats on this great rendition and thanks for sharing.

Trem,
Thanks very much. My bias is to find a tone and record the sound coming from my amp. There is no software after effect going on here.
This is my strat on neck + middle pick up with full tone and volume. I’m going into my new Emerson Custom Pomeroy overdrive pedal. This has 5 different overdrive types but more importantly has a knob to blend the guitar signal with the overdrive signal, I’m at about 50% blend here. Gain was about 50%. The pedal also has low, mid and high eq settings. I pushed the mids to about 75% and high to about 60%. Pushing the mids on a strat seems to give that smooth tone (an Equalizer pedal in a pedal chain is an interesting option you don’t hear much about). I have some subtle slapback delay and then into my Fender Vibrolux on the Bassman channel, bass and treble at 6 and reverb at 4.The Vibrolux is basically a bright, clean amp that works great with pedals.
I must have practiced a thousand times with a thousand different tones looking for a smooth, fairly bright, slightly overdriven sound.

Thanks for describing your setup in so much detail, John. It probably sounds more complicated than it was (for you), but getting the “right” tone is something I still need to learn, too. I am still stuck in the quest for finding the “right” guitar. But before long (and after a bundle) I’m sure I can check that off. Along the way I will practice a wee bit of playing my other guitars..

Very cool man.. hmm, just curious, what do think if it had a little more bite in the distortion, not much more..? As it is, it sounds great.
What I like to do, just for the fun of it, record direct, clean, and then test different amp simulations. But, you need the amp sims to do this. I have a few from Toon Track.. Ya never know what happy accidents awaits..
Don't practice till you get it right, practice till you can't get it wrong.

Gene,
Absolutely a great alternative. I’ll probably get there in time. I think I’m still searching for the tones I like and get inspired by the tone I’m hearing. More bite, hmmm….is that like “more cowbell”.

JohnLOL.. that happens to remind of a new automotive insurance commercial I saw. Dude does a solo with a triangle..
But, seriously, there are pro’s and cons to doing it that way. I happened to accidentally found a tone with my setup that I actually really like. Actually using my boost pedal for the overdrive.. lol
It is so nice having so many options, like a big tool box of wrenches.
Don't practice till you get it right, practice till you can't get it wrong.

Hey Trem, I am a fan of the Strat neck and middle pick ups sound. That is how I recognised it as a Strat, no black magic or voodoo going on, all the other things that Charjo added to the sound I wouldnt have know except possibly for the hint of slapback, but we are all using slapback, arnt we?.

Perfect in every way. Great playing and nice tone for this piece. And though I don’t get into the recording aspects, this was a very nice job of recording. You are definitely putting out professional quality music these days.

John When are we going to hear the Charjo Blues Band has become fully fledged. Seems to me you can call yourself an accomplished guitar player. Very nicely done and presented. JohnStrat

Playing and recording are both fabulous. The tone is fine, and it has the advantage of being distinct from the backing track guitar. If it were me, I would want a little less overdrive, but that’s just a quibble. You did really great on those ending runs, and the syncopation on the repeated bend, all of which I find somewhat intimidating.

JohnJohn, I should’ve waited but rushed the first out,, there is certainly a lot of stuff going on here as Brian explans (enjoy it going slow now with the video) I am right there but will present it again when it is as tight as you demonstrated.. wish you showed your strat.. what is that again an elite with rosewood? Anyone audio quality and this lesson you get 5 stars man! I have time today to get this going almost there lol

John,
My strat is a little different, it’s a Vintage “Hot Rod” stratocaster, 60’s version with rosewood fretboard. Fender produced 50’s and 60’s versions of the strat and tele (the tele with three pick ups) in 2014. It has so called vintage “grey bottom” pick ups and S-1 switching, 6105 frets, nitrocellulose finish with vintage features like the truss rod adjustment near the neck pick up and no stripe down the back of the neck. The serial number is on the neck plate rather than the back of the headstock. The tuners are vintage looking but are locking.
I traded an American deluxe strat toward my Les Paul and recently sold a pewter coloured American Standard to the guy who sold me his ES-335.

Hey John,
That was a great version of that lesson, I agree the tone was awesome, and the gear setup/sounds great too, just want to acknowledge that most tone comes from the fingers in my opinion. The amps/pedals/etc help but they will never hide, or make up for what the fingers can do dynamically and tonally. Clearly, you’ve got that part licked, and your tone/sound really comes to life in your playing. I agree with Billy, you’ve got your own sound going, and it’s awesome!
Play Loud!
