Hi AMers, here’s my version of a great little composition by Brian. I had fun learning it. My only problem with it is that it’s too short!!!  When I play it, I barely get going on it, and it’s over, and I’m really inept when it comes to improvising new verses – they sound much like the existing verses. This composition has all the makings of a really great 5 minute performance piece, but I just don’t know how to build that. Anybody got suggestions? Anyway have a listen – any help is much appreciated!

            Hi Dave,
I edited your submission, you need to copy the https: portion of the url as well to get the link to embed in your post.
Coincidentally, I was looking at that lesson yesterday. I think the way Brian structured it there is only room to do a response type lick over the Am portions. Any add-ons are going to sound similar to what Brian did just due to the chord progression. Yours sounded just fine.
I liked your tone and style.

Very nice Dave. I wish I could help with your question but I’m new to improvising myself!

                  Nicely played Dave.

Honestly, I just wing it. If I know the key and the scale that fits, I just go with that and let my ear do the rest. Sometimes I come up with something I like and sometimes not. Of course, it does help to understand chord and triad patterns too , Brian has a ton of lessons on those.

Hi Dave , nice work with this lesson you captured that minor groove perfectly.
I played the same one for a challenge submission a while ago , to make it a bit longer I added another verse in the A minor section which worked quite well , starting it with the opening lick from Ep 127 and kept things in the same vein as the lesson , but as John mentioned it will sound similar to the original , maybe that’s not a bad thing .
                    Have fun with it .

                        Hi Martin,
Thanks for the comments! That’s a good idea to borrow from EP 127. I might even use the whole lesson as verses 3 and 4 and finish off with verse 2 from EP427.
I’ll experiment with that. Anyway, lots to work with.
                        Thanks again!

Very well played on your gorgeous Ibanez, Dave! About composing your own licks, I’m struggling with it too and I don’t have any suggestion but experimenting without any pressure to reach the goal immediately.

Thanks for the comments Guido! As for composing new licks, I’m working on a few ideas – if I get something put to gather, I’ll post it post it.

That sounds awesome, Dave. And regarding your question, my way is, let it grow. Add one lick and perhaps a second one. You‘ve got a wonderful plant, what will grow piece by piece.
