Greetings all,
I came across what I would describe, at the expense of sounding corny, a real game-changer as far as my learning goes. This inexpensive device ($135 CAD) is a recording gadget made by TASCAM. The model I have is the DR-05. It has tons of high-end features but I really like that it allows me to load up Brian’s MP3s from my MAC and play them back at different speeds while maintaining proper pitch. It can play those MP3s and record on top of them at whatever playback speed I want, taking my guitar either from the built-in stereo mics or the external input (which I connect to my MAC), or I can just monitor my playing on top of the backing track without actually recording with the ‘monitor mix’ feature if I want to use headphones and not be plugged into my amp. I can also use the line out port to connect to a speaker.
I can set loops easily, delete quickly, skip forward or backwards. In my opinion, the product features are top end and useful.I have been working on EP266 and with the help of this gadget, I’ve been able to slowly crank up the speed to 100% by taking advantage of all the features that help with practicing. I’m sure there are other ways to do this and other similar products out there, but I wanted to share something that I recently found and has been of tremendous help to me. This toy is small, portable, packed with awesome features and won’t break the bank. I use it just about every single time I practice. Oh, and it also has a built in tuner which seems to be spot on.
Hope this helps!

Hey Randy,
I didn’t know they had that capability. Sounds like a great tool worth looking into. BTW, just back from a trip to British Columbia spending those CAD’s.Mike

Hey S-L-Rey…and depending where you’re from, $CAD certainly can be cheap to buy! I’m from way over on the other side of the country near Ottawa. Hope you had a nice visit!

Very cool. I do the same thing without having to move the backing tracks off my Mac. I just open up a little $30 app called Anytune, and it automatically finds the backing tracks and does everything you describe above. I plug my guitar into my Mac through a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface, which is used by many AM members. Then my Mac outputs through a couple of studio monitors which sound as good as any mid-sized amp. With this setup, I’m finding that I use my guitar amps less and less. If you learn to use Logic Pro X, you can set it up for real-time monitoring and use some incredibly advanced plug-in effects just for practice sessions.

I recently was lent a zoom Q2 hd handy video recorder.. it’s cool but honestly still rather use my bluphone android mobile phone camera..generally, easier to use with google chrome and youtube account to submit here.. and I am never ashamed of any my amateur submissions unless I really think they should be deleted.. my submissions are for me so that others who share here encourage and help best with our skill levels.. critique and help each other,. all my video submissions are for me to learn more!.. i have so much yet to learn but unless it were not so much fun here last few years , i’d be elsewhere ..Brian is a terrific weekly motivator been really fun sharing here what he teaches! between premium members/participants/friends let’s have fun ,,just practice and enjoy!!

I just came across a frustrating limitation…contrary to what I said in my initial post, it looks like it can actually only overdub on top of a MP3 that is being played back at its normal 100% playback speed. I thought I could play back one of Brian’s MP3 at say, 90%, then overdub a recording on top of it at that speed, but it forces everything to 100% in this mode. Not a big deal as it only takes a few minutes to set up the device with various speed files (found a nice, free utility), but it would have been great to have this (obvious) feature on the the device. Oh well, my love affair with it lasted longer than most!

Sunjamr: I have the same set up as you with my Mac going to a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 into powered monitors. I have been using Capo for practice and tried Anytune after you mentioned it. It has more features than Capo. Can you tell me how Anytune automatically finds backing tracks. I can’t figure out how to do that with Anytune.
Thanks for your help.
