Hi There,
I have a Fender Stratocaster, a fender Princeton Chorus amp and a Digitech RP100A.
I am completely new to guitar playing so could anybody please tell me how to get some Mark Knopfler sounds on my guitar. I have tried to read the instruction manual but it makes no sense to me.
Many thanks.
Gregboy.

I’m not sure exactly what you’re looking for, but Brian has some Mark Knopfler lesson on the site.
Good luck, hope this helps. -

Hi Greg
I’m not familiar with the Digitech pedal that you have but I do know that Digitech is a company that builds quality products so you have a good foundation to start with.
First, I would go to the Digitech website and check for a forum similar to this one and post your question there. Plus, they may have a page of suggested settings that owners have posted that would get you into the ballpark. When I had the Fender Mustang iii amp, you could download thousands of presets and I would think that Digitech would be the same.
Second, experiment. Knopfler is one of my favorites and if you begin with the first 2 albums, you hear that he used a pretty clean tone on those recording. From what I’ve read, he used a 130 watt Music Man amp and a Fender twin in those days.
Your Digitech unit probably has a setting for Fender Twin so start there. The only thing that I would add for that tone would be a hint of compression and some delay. Use spring reverb and keep adjusting the tone controls and reverb until you get close.Third, for his tone for, say Money For Nothing, do a Google search for Mark Knofler gear. It was either Guitar Player or Guitar World, but one of them had an extensive article on Mark’s gear and how to achieve it. There may be others that you could find as well.
Fourth, and this may be the most important to remember (at least for me it is) I don’t have unlimited money to fund equipment and with the equipment that i do have, I will only have limited success in copying someone’s tone. The most important for me right now is to really focus on my playing to capture the phrasing of the licks correctly. Give a 2 bar measure in A and tell 2 guitar players to use the pentatonic scale to play the same song – they will come up with something totally different. As one who is learning, I want to phrase my notes correctly and buy the right equipment when the time comes.
Hope this helps, have to apologize for it not being more but there is no easy path when it comes to tone.

Also, I’ve found a lot of tabs for Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler on the web. Knopfler’s lead playing is great but if you really listen, especially on the 1st two albums, there are some great rhythm parts being played. Uncertain if it was Mark or his brother playing those line but regardless who it is, those rhythm parts in those songs are worth learning

This post is a little old but if Gregs still around.
A strat or tele for guitar, for amps he uses Fender twins and vibrolux’s, also a Roland Jazz ChorusThere is ALOT of compession on the guitar and some chorus. There is also a subtle flanging on some tunes as well.
