I recorded my challenge with headphones only to find my old Adobe Premiere video editor has stopped working. All I have is a video with no backing track. I suspect this is because the software is now sold by licence for a proscribed period of time. I did purchase new software online but the download link isn’t working and now I’m at the mercy of customer service.

How does the software work in the Apple universe? Is it time to make the switch to Logic Pro and IMovie or even Final Cut Pro?

Who knows John, with a PC, I currently use Ableton (DAW) and Adobe Premiere (which I purchased during Covid) for my recordings. They all seem much of a muchness, as the saying goes. I tested Reaper which didn’t give me any real advantage and whilst I’ve been a huge fan of Adobe products over the years, Premiere Elements is, in my view flakey.

Given what I use it for, the best I can say, it’s okay for now,

All I can say is I was a Microsoft fan for 30 years but when I retired and switched to Apple I was never more happier. Things just seem to work almost all the time which I wish I could say the same for Microsoft. I don’t think you will be sorry if you make the switch. Just be prepared to pay premium prices!

Once you go Apple, you don’t go back! 😉

You didn’t say if you are Apple Mac already and just considering new software packages or considering a wholesale change to Apple. If it’s the latter, then I personally couldn’t get off Microsoft fast enough and did so as soon as I retired. It’s a relatively expensive option and you’ll be entering Apple’s walled garden, but it’s worth it in my view..

From the way you phrased the question I think it might be the former though.

You can rent adobe software and they have several packages available. I do that with Photoshop and Lightroom on a Mac although I don’t use Premier. It works very well on Mac, updates are automatically installed so you can always be on the latest version. It might be a short stop solution to get you out of your current corner even if your not interested longer term.

I do use Final Cut Pro and it’s very powerful but has its quirks and has a learning curve. If you’re thinking of preparing Jola style videos then it will do that with ease. One word of warning, it uses huge amounts of disk space. It’s not unusual for a 2 minute video which boils down to around 200Mbytes to use 25-50 Gigabytes of working space. The more effects used the more that increases.. Most of it is just working storage and you can housekeep it but my Mac was running out of space all the time. The solution was to buy a 2Terabyte external SSD drive which works very well.

If you’re only planning on simple videos of yourself playing, then Final Cut Pro is overkill and iMovie would I’m sure be sufficient. I think Denise uses iMovie now.

I’m a Cubase DAW user which harks back to when I was using Microsoft, so can’t comment on Pro Logic. though I’ve been tempted. It seems to me, from looking at comments from others on the forum over the years, that DAWs are pretty much a commodity item and all do the job for our kinds of recordings so its just a matter of personal preference.

Apple is so strong in the media sphere that I’d expect all the mainstream software packages would work just fine. E.g. Cubase runs exactly the same on Mac as it did on Windows,
