If someone asked me to play something today, I would probably launch quickly into one or more of the latest challenges I’d posted here at Active Melody. However that hasn’t always been the case for me, for many years my favourite ‘go to piece’ to play was that well known perennial by John D Loudermilk – Windy and Warm.
This iconic number made famous by Chet Atkins was the very first fingerstyle melody that inspired me to start playing an acoustic guitar without a pick.I don’t play this piece very often these days but it definitely holds strong memories of me struggling to learn it at the time, with what initially felt like having eleven fingers and three thumbs.
This piece has been sat on the back-burner for many years and this Challenge has given me another excuse to blow the dust off and give it another whirl, even though these days, a little rusty.Richard

This is mindblowing, Rich! The fingerpicking masterclass indeed! I’m 100% agree with you said about this tune as well. This is one of the greatest acoustic arrangement ever.

Loved this Richard! Real ‘Chet’ playing right here. This chugs along so well as it should and you have all the guitaristic elements on show. I have learnt the Tommy Emmanuel version many years ago and loved playing it. I might dust off my version again one day. Thanks for the inspiration. All the best! 😎🎸😎

I’ll take your “rusty” anyday, Richard. That steady thumping bass is truly impressive. You always sound like two guitars in perfect synchrony.

I am so glad you blew the dust! I remember you mentioned that you played Windy and warm in the past. How I wish I could play that tune like you.
Great picking skills, tempo.. and everything played totally clean and perfectly. Love the arpeggi in-between.
Yes it sounds like 2 guitars.
Bravo!!!!!
DenisePS: Brian’s new Chet lesson is for you!

That was frickin’ masterful! If there was any rust, you certainly overcame it with style. A beautiful piece all around. Good recording quality, too.

Wow. Sounds so consistent and precise. Thanks for submitting. It sounds great. Can I ask how you recorded this?
-
January 5, 2024 at 3:09 pm #360049
Andre, quite simple really. I used two channels into Focusrite, one from small condenser mic and one direct into Focusrite. I mixed the audio in Ableton to suit, added slight reverb and then panned both channels hard left and right to add width. Finally merged sound and edited video in Adobe Premiere.

Oh, Richard, just think what you could really do with eleven fingers and three thumbs; Chet Atkins, move over!!
You did fabulously with only ten digits, it sounds great as always and has that classic feel. Happy new year! -
January 5, 2024 at 7:53 pm #360174
Oh, man… I feel like I just died and went to fingerstyle heaven!
What a stellar performance of this incredible classic, definitely on top of my all time favorites! I feel ashamed that I can’t play it even though I have tried many times. Your dusting off this piece must have been so satisfying, Richard! I bet you will keep it updated daily to keep in your ready-to-play repertoire. I admire your steady groove and the feel for the rhythm, that’s a gift!🎸JoLa

There is awesome musicality in your technique and touch Richard. Super great performance of this iconic song. While I’ve read and seen it played with right hand thumb and one finger, or thumb and two fingers, it looks like you play it with thumb and three fingers. However you do it, you get great economy of movement, and beauty in sound. Cheers, Tom

Man, Richard that is so smooth and well rehearsed. Sounds really pro. I’m looking for the bass player…

Well you certainly dusted this one off Richard ! That was superb you captured all the detail and nuances this classic tune demands, a fine recording as well the subtle reverb accentuates those bends perfectly.
Ps .you asked about the floods in North Cadbury I’m sure they got away with it this time but there certainly was a lot of flash floods in the surrounding areas my journey home from work that evening was very “nautical “ to say the least!Martin

January 6, 2024 at 5:59 am #360326
Don’t see any dust left on that, Richard! That was epic, so tight in the timing and with all those little details and nuances as Martin mentioned.
This is a perfect song to have in the locker for one of those play something moments.
It’s got a toe tapping rhythm and those recurring melody lines that people can hook onto even when they haven’t heard it before. At least that’s my take I’d not heard it before (I know, how did that happen) and was mesmerised! Now I want to learn it too 👍 -

Wow, Windy and Warm is just a treat for musical ears. Impressed, with all the hard work it would take to get this result. Masterclass – Top notch.

Yes, you succeeded to blow the dust off this piece. It sounded crystal and clear with a thumb rhythm player, who is looking for his equal. I‘m sure Chet and Tommy would have applauded to this one. Thank you so much for posting this. This is an inspiration for me. Because I‘m now the man with the eleven fingers and three thumbs. I‘m trying to learn this since a few months. Now I know, there is still a lot of work. But I can say, it‘s also so much joy to play this. And great joy to listen to you playing it, Richard.

Well, listened to and watched your video yesterday in my YouTube and and I was just amazed! I mean, we already know you’re a finger style maestro, but this rendition is simply beautiful, flawlessly played with a perfect timing! Now, I read this is one of your old “workhorses” and I can understand why. Listened again with great pleasure today and I’m really glad you blown off the dust from it and let us to listen to this piece so brilliantly played! Thanks for sharing!

Well, Richard, I think JoLa’s finger-style heaven remark is completely correct. That – again – blew my mind. Finger-style heaven, indeed, and the most beautiful cloud there is. Hammergeil! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

Wow Richard! You are a wonderful finger style guitarist!!! Beautifully played and I liked how it sounded to go back and forth from major to minor.

Simply awesome this performance Richard! As I already wrote under MIke’s post I’m approaching this style right now, and find it so difficult, this is so inspiring!
If I wasn't making mistakes I wouldn't be the kind of player I want to be. Perfection is dangerous.

Great song! Your version sounds as good as the version I know best, Doc Watson’s, it’s clear you’ve been playing it for a long time, it’s flowing.
