Hi Folks I have a new Ipad. I want to install a DAW and it looks as thought the choice is Garage band or Cubasis. I do not really want to be very ambitious with it and dont think I need lots of bells and whisltess. I am hearing good things about Cubasis and it looks to be very good but one has to pay a moderate fee. Garage band comes free in the Ipad but looks to place a lot of bells and whistles in the foreground. Any comments would be welcome. I intend to use a Scarlet focus rite 8i6 with it.

I don’t know anything about Cubasis, but I can tell you I recently started using GarageBand after some members here recommended it. It is really easy to use, free, and does everything I need it to do. Previously, I had waisted a lot of time trying to use Pro Tools which has more features and is an “industry standard”. However, I am not a sound engineer and found Pro Tools to be complicated to do even simple things. Now with GarageBand, I can do what I need to and not waist all of my guitar practice time tinkering with DAW software.

              Thanks Alan,
I too have tinkered first with Cubase lite bundled with my THR10C a long time back and that was really tricky to get up and running even for a friend an ex sound engineer it took him some couple of hours just to get it basically sorted to an installation and then it was quite a beast. Having been a bit put off lots of folk here recommended Reaper I had a look at it and liked it and found it a bit more intuitive.

After that I got fully distracted by all sorts of life difficulties and so now I am back to thinking about it all again but looking at it from an IPad pro point of view. I suspect most here will say Garage band but my inital looks see so much up front that I have little interest in at the moment. But maybe I should ignore all that and just get stuck in for a bit and see how it goes. It certainly sounds like it has way more than enough for me but not too difficult to sort out.

Alan O speaks the truth. Years ago I used GarageBand on my iPad, and it worked just fine. I used an iRig to plug my guitar into it, not a Scarlett. The Scarlett 8i6 is powered separately, unlike the 2i2 which is powered straight from the USB cable. The 8i6 is more complex to use than the 2i2, however, and requires you to download an app to set it up and control it. With the 2i2, you just plug it in and start using it. As for the bells and whistles that you see when you start up GarageBand, you don’t have to use them at all. Those are for people who want to build a song using “software instruments” and built-in Apple Loops and samples, which most of us hardcore guitarists never use. Just ignore them and get on with recording, laying down tracks. The trick to using GarageBand and any other DAW is to look up every single question you have on Youtube. You could start with doing a search for “GarageBand beginner tutorial”. Then go to “Record a guitar into GarageBand”, then maybe “Add a backing track to GarageBand”, and whatever other questions you might have. Youtube is the key.

                  Hi Steve,
Thanks as it happens I chose the 8i6 realy because it had a power supply thinking that the USB C would charge the IPad. I now discover that the 8i6 does not power the C cable. The Ipad holds up for many hours so not too much of a problem and i could always install a powered hub and the extra 8i6 facilites are nice. Also I got a demo one with 50$ 0ff. I think I am going to be very happy with it knowing how many of you guys use them. When I finnished the install just a while ago it took me to a quick Garage Band YT video which was very self explanatary and having a little prior knowledge I was able to follow along no problem. So thanks for the heads up and i will certainly be looking at You Tube when required or making use of all your brains many thanks.

I fully concur with everyone else: GarageBand is simple, flexible and free. It will do everything you’ll need for quite a while. And if you ever need to switch gears and start doing pro-level stuff, Logic Pro will be already 80% familiar to you.

While still very capable, Cubase is considered somewhat old-ish.

Thanks. Cubase is certainly a heavy load but the new verrsion Cubasis is apparenlty a whole lot smoothed out and there is a trial version available but hten its 50$ or so plus some addons. So overall I will go Garage band for now and see what happens. Thanks for chipping in.

GarageBand is already on your iPad and user friendly. It is a pretty powerful tool. I use it on my iPhone, iPad and Desk Top Apple computer. The sound quality and simplicity of it are unparalleled.

Looks to be the consensus way forward so I will see how I get on thanks

As a “fly on the wall” here tonight, this has been such valuable reading for me!
I was giving thought to choosing Reaper as a back up DAW to the Cubase 5 I’ve been ‘working’ with for about eight years or more.

Cubase does have a lot of opportunities and creative tools but indeed it IS a “BEAST!” And when something goes awry with it, it can drive one totally mad trying to figure out ‘what’s wrong!” I had that happen recently and underwent a great deal of stress until I finally ‘stumbled’ upon a proper fix. It seems to be operating fine now but I fear the specially created system is eight+ years old and I fear for my sanity when it ‘bites the dust!’
Hence my consideration of Garage Band as a back up.

Thank you all for chiming in on this subject.
Any other thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated :0)

                          Regards,
                          Marie
