Here is a really interesting insight, using the example of the well-known and popular Marty Schwartz, into how you can earn a living with music these days, with all the ups and downs. YouTube has caused a real revolution for teachers, but also for students. For me personally, I definitely don’t want to earn a living from music because I simply don’t have the musical skills, but also because it would be too unsafe. As a learner, however, I absolutely enjoy taking advantage of all the opportunities on YouTube to improve musically, but also to communicate with like-minded people and present my own videos without any commercial pressure. The AM is the perfect place for me.

I’ve watched Marty’s career develop over the past 10 years or so. At one point, he tried putting out a subscription-based iPhone app which was supposed to include a series of beginners’ lessons, but the app crashed all the time, never worked properly, so he abandoned it. After he closed it down, he never gave refunds to the people like me who subscribed.
Mary Spender is another musician who has tried to use Youtube as her major source of income. She has several videos out discussing how much she has earned on Youtube. Not that much, according to her.

My first online guitar teacher was Marty Schwartz. He was fun and upbeat and I became a life member. The video skipped the part when his site was called Guitar Jamz. I still have dozens of cd’s with jam tracks in different keys and styles. He then started Marty Music and by that time I was following Brian at Active Melody around 2014. I lost access to my courses after the switch but all it took was an e mail and it was all restored.
