If you would like to see a short (6min) animated video on playing in a 4 Fret Zone anywhere on the neck of the guitar
Yep, the key is learning where all those root notes are. I think most people first learn the root notes on the low E (and therefore also the high E) string, then a year later, learn them on the A string. After a few more years, they learn the notes on the D string.

Its funny but never really thought about it even thou we find the next root note on the D string. If you know the low E string then the D string notes are all 2 frets up the fretboard from the E string notes. Pretty easy to find.
Thanks for sharing this Gordon. Useful information. About a year ago I sat with my guitar and explored the 1, 4, and 5 chords in the same position, much like this video does. I also added the major scale for the key in that position. This was very helpful for improvising simple melodies while emphasizing/landing on the chord tones. It really helped open the fretboard for me and was a big step toward being able to play the changes. I would recommend that practice approach highly.
Thanks Michael, that is a good suggestion and I will try it. Watching an animated video of the process helped me remember the chord choices.
