This is a really interesting find Billy. I was given a copy of his book ‘Brian May’s Red Special – the story of a homemade guitar’. It is a really good read if you are any way interested in guitars. Him and his dad made everything, including winding their own pickups. One interesting snippet is the construction of the body, made from a piece of oak from an old piano in the centre to anchor the bridge, and the rest is made from blockwood (inch wide strips glued together) and plywood. So much for the importance of ‘tone’ woods!! For a plectrum he uses an old coin, a sixpence piece (no longer currency since 1972) and apparently he has a box of them so he’ll never run out.
          Thank you Billy
By the way I was never a fan of Brian May or Queen but there you go!

For my recent Queen cover I studied Brian May intensely for a couple weeks, including this great old Star Licks video, and generally found that he does a lot of running up and down the major scale, but lots of 2 steps up and 1 step back kind of sequencing.

The best example (his trademark BoRhap scale run) starts at 16:55 of the video Billy posted. The next 90 seconds just might be the best Brian May lesson ever. Running up and down the major scale, using bends and sequencing, that 90 seconds is a master class in soloing.

This is a classic riff every guitar player should have in his hands. The tab is available all over the internet (“Bohemian Rhapsody guitar solo”).

            thanks for posting this Billy.

                Hi Billy,

Thank you very much for flagging up this outstanding documentary. I really enjoyed watching it even if it made me feel so small compare to the big man. Especially when he says:’…and now we shall take it slowly…’ it is still far too fast for me… I think I will stick to our Brian.
However I will give a go to Bohemian Rapsody’s solo, pianissimo of course.

                Merci.
                Franck
