Hi there
I’m quite a newbie ( less then 40 days) guitar leaner and my 54th years old fingers do not help me a lot.
I’ve presently quite a hard time to play with a tempo even at slow one.
I must concentrate on how to right place my left fingers, then how to hold my pick (I hold it as a pen! and it’s a pain to correct), then strum the right strings, etc..Each time I try to count 1+2+3+4 in my mind I loose the whole stuff :p
Just tell me things are going better with the time lol , or is there a good way to do things in order ?regards

Regarding encouragement, don’t worry – that’s all normal and I promise you’ll slowly start to improve. It’s like taking up jogging if you haven’t done it in a long time. Those first few runs seem nearly impossible, then before you know it you’re cruising along effortlessly. One thing I will say though is try not to over-analyze things. It’s important to be accurate but don’t try too many things at once. In the beginning you may want to just put on a movie or basketball game, kick back on the couch and practice strumming with the right hand… not giving it intense focus, but just sort of doing it in the background while you’re really watching tv. Sometimes it just clicks with you, without you even knowing it. I think if you bare down too close and try something over and over again with laser focus you run the risk of burning yourself out.. or feeling like it’s just not working. It’s kind of like staring at the clock waiting for 20 minutes to pass.. sometimes it’s better to just let your mind drift a little during those repetitive tasks (at least that approach works really well for me).
Don’t worry about the 54 year old fingers, they’ll work out just fine.

Hi psour33.I was going to say don’t fret over it but well ..oh never mind . I think you have about 10 days on me for practicing-wtg.
** First thing i want to say is be careful how you fret-if you are holding down the first fret “F”on lets say the first string and you want to then hold the third fret for a “G” , DON’T lift the first fret. This causes tension in the hands that can cause pain if practicing a lot. Technically, you can fret up to the fourth finger (pinkey) and have all the previous fingers down.. <
**Secondly, rhythm with strumming will become less awkward-I have to believe that-I think I’ll try that mind drift strumming-makes it seem less like work. -

Well, thank you everybody. I’ll try to compile your points of view and find my own way, though I believe that they are tons of paths leading to playing guitar and there are not 2 guitar players in the world that followed the same. None is all wrong, none is all good. the secret is is working hard on the neck and test everything.
Ty again

Don’t beat yourself up about timng… learning guitar is hard enough as it is to start with…
get yourself into it… get a few chords under your belt, as things stop being so hard and the ole’ fingers get the idea you can try getting your timing down… it’ll come either way the more you play.
