The April 2025 Challenge for Active Melody was to challenge yourself by self-imposing a limitation on yourself. So I tried to do percussive chord plucking on a cover of Best Part by Daniel Caesar (which is a song I’ve wanted to try for over a year).
Since my accident last September my shoulder, wrist and finger have been healing well enough for me to give this a try. My singing is not very good but it is what it is! I didn’t think I was going to make it this month but this is the first and only take I was able to do.
The song is a simple progression of what I consider a beautiful chord arrangement – Dmaj7-Am7-Gmaj7-Bbmaj7. Near the end there are a couple of embellishments accomplished with the good old pinky finger!
Thanks to all the Active Melody members that have encouraged me throughout my recovery. I appreciate you all. Music really is a healing art.

Glad you made it to the challenge, Joe. That was a very cool jazzy progression and a great showcase! It’s really great that you can play again, even if it’s not too long at the time. Music is a healing art, indeed 🙂

That was the best Joe. Your voice really suited the song . This is a beautiful chord progression and that is all it required for your voice work to complete the package. The singer/player is a good direction for you pursue and to open up more possibilities.🙂

Great use of percussive comping, Joe, a technique I still strugggle with. Your voice suited the lovely progression very nicely.

Not familiar with this song, but I liked it very much in your rendition, Joe! Very good rhythm accompaniment with the guitar and smooths vocals. In fact I would say one of your best so far!

I absolutely love that chord progression and the gentle percussive playing suited the song perfectly as did your earthy, soulful vocals. So good to see you back behind a guitar and in the challenges and to see you continue to heal.

Good to see you working that progression out on the SG Joe. Most folks think that guitar is just for AC/DC rock but it’s much more versatile as you show here. Keep healing and thanks for the post!

I used my SG on the neck pickup and Fender Super Champ X2 with a little reverb directly into my DAW with no enhancements in Logic Pro. I thought it was very suitable too. Thank you Mike.
