Hi members,
I’m using the EP 435 B.B. Box track. In the spirit of the challenge this is a second take improv. You can, at times, see the indecision in my fingers. Not perfect but not bad. Would have submitted earlier but after 2 years of protecting my elderly in-laws from Covid, they contracted it. Ironically, it probably happened at the second booster appointment. After close contact getting them to appointments we are now waiting for the inevitable but so far, so good and they are doing very well. Looking forward to catching up on the submissions.

Hey John, not only do you know your Maj and Min Pents in every position, but you know how to make music out of them. Definitely some flashes of brilliance in there.
I could see a little bit of hesitation in your playing, but that’s quite understandable. I’m sure you have a lot on your mind.
Beautiful tone, expert string bending, and most importantly, very musical.Best wishes to your family,
Ralph(Those double stops at 1:31-Awesome)

Hi John, right from the start you got me! Awesome! Such a cool combination of minor and major scales, very cool licks, I will copy some of them, if you won’t mind! For me this was one of your best submissions ever! Thank you for this lesson!

Hey John:
Awesome playing. So much to like and enjoy. To high highlight three things: note articulation and clarity was clear as a bell (even in the uppermost registers of the neck), timing is as good as the German train system, and vibrato is so distinguished it would get BB’s attention. A pleasure to hear.
Cheers, Tom

Well John I wish my fingers suffered from the same indecision as yours if that’s what it does for your playing. Masterful!
-
May 1, 2022 at 4:23 pm #307064
No indecision to see for me in your fingers, Charjo. I only see that they always move to right place. Awesome improvisation! I enjoyed it.
Btw i also plan my second booster at the moment, should i think it over?Take the chance to meet your AM friends on Zoom
The next Meetup is expected to take place in November 2025There will be a detailed announcement here in the forum in good time.

Definitely go for it, Manfred. I was reluctant until I heard about the German fellow who got 90 jabs in order to sell the vaccine cards. I figured I could do 4.

I surely will go for my second booster, too. I also heard this story with the 90 jabs, but i don’t think i will take this challenge 😉 All the best to you!

Lots of tasty licks in there, John. I think BB would have had a smile on his face hearing that. I can tell you’ve spent a lot of time studying his licks. Hope your in-laws don’t get too sick.

So much tasty stuff in there. I can sense so much artist influences in your playing. Top notch as usual. Your tone and bends were awesome.

May 2, 2022 at 2:36 am #307270
Really great playing…so much variety all over the neck… I was giggling towards the end as I was thinking of you guesting with BB and him giving you the signal to take the solo…and four minutes later him walking over and saying “it’s my gig brother….” 😂😂 just fantastic playing. Hope your family all recover quickly and you steer clear of it.

Wow , that’s a marathon of licks a real fretboard workout at a fine pace ,you navigate with ease , I watched for that slight bit of indecision “shall I shan’t I “ yeah why not! There’s a bit of an art moulding the maj/ minor sounds together this just flows seamlessly.
Top notch and a pleasure to listen to .Martin

Well John, I think it’s all been said above. Your obvious skill and mastery make wonderful music together, and give a huge amount of pleasure to all who listen. Thank you.
I hope you and your family all come through ok. -

Hi Charjo I really enjoyed your improvisation 👏👏👏 I notice an absolute mastery of pentatonic scales. Apart from the guitar, what equipment do you use ? Greetings from Naples 🙋🙋🙋

Hi Carlo,
I mic a Fender Vibrolux 68 reissue tube amp with a Shure 57. I use various overdrive pedals this was a Pomeroy Custom. I usually put a bit of slapback reverb from a TC Electronics Flashback delay pedal and reverb is from the amp. I added some compression in the Presonus Studio One software to take the edge off some of the high, harder hit notes.

Very nice up tempo jam, lots of smooth major / minor transitions and phrased very well. I would say you nailed it!

Great job on fast paced track. Great tone.
Indecision? Would love to get to that level of indecision with my fingers while jamming +;) Loved it.
Best to your in-laws. I know quite a few folks fully boosted and vaccinated getting it but fortunately because of the vaccines and boosters, the symptoms are relatively mild. -
May 2, 2022 at 8:26 am #307377
John, that was a really good demonstration (and culmination) of Brian’s lessons on all things pentatonic. You have obviously mastered all of the positions for both major and minor pent scales and you have a large library of blues licks mastered. Well done man. I always love your posts because it’s like another EP from Brian. BTW, good job with managing the COVID dilema with your in-laws. It is a really tough situation and hopefully they get through it ok and have stronger immunities as a result. Cheers. Pap

i’m fascinating by your bends and your double stops : they make me dizzy.
following your solo i get dazed by so many situation reversal, sometime up the neck, a second later you are down, then you slide !
what a trip !
excellent.Where does the white go when snow melts?

No I can’t!!!😄😄👍
Your playing and tone are a dream.
I loved these descending arpeggi, man that sounded good. I must copy that one.
Top level playing. I think that was your best sub I’ve seen so far. Blues at its best.

Hey Charjo
Excellent work, pleasant to listen to and exciting. Both for the duration and the melodic richness it demonstrates your great ability in improvisation. I believe but you can confirm that you have always had this creative ability that you have improved with theoretical and practical study.Livio

Hi John, just fantastic! You had my foot tapping and chair-dancing happening. With your talent and experience you know that you’re playing well, but I hope you also know that your listeners are really enjoying it too. Top level music, for sure. Best to your in-laws and hopefully you and your immediate family will well.

You can, at times, see the indecision in my fingers. Not perfect but not bad.
Yes, I can. Shall I go major, or shall I go minor? 🙂
And no, not bad… Not bad at all! 🙂Great tone, great chops, and a nicely flowing journey. You got my feet tapping too!
I also finally caught Covid a month and a half ago, but it wasn’t that bad for me. Nothing more than a big cold. So you guys should be fine.

May 2, 2022 at 4:05 pm #307569
Brilliant John, blues playing at its best. One of the take away elements for me was the fact you used the whole fretboard, great stuff and all the while making top shelf music. Hope your family gets through COVID. All the best! 🥸🎸🥸

Oh, good Lord! If I’m pretty sure you are not a surgeon from what I remember, John – but you sure know how to play MUSIC with a surgical precision! Your flying all over the pentatonics on every inch of the fretboard tells me you know that real estate like your own pocket, both major and minor! Whoosh, what a ride that was just to watch your fingers! The bends couldn’t get any better, the tasty double stops, the vibrato, simply awesome! I would love to see you and Brian jam live!
The hesitation in your fingers … 🤔 must have been on a microscopic level that only you could pick up on. I think you, no – we ALL – should improvise more in our submissions! I also couldn’t help but notice your right hand looked exactly the same as Brian’s in the way you hold the pick and move your wrist without the pinky anchor. I wonder if that’s coincidental or you actually put some thoughts into it…? Anyway, man – what a masterpiece!!!
I also hope your in-laws get better soon!

May 2, 2022 at 7:58 pm #307603
Jola,
Not a surgeon but I delivered thousands of babies, maybe just trying to deliver a decent improv. I don’t think a pinky “anchor” is a good idea. You always need contact with the guitar to have a point of reference for picking the right string. Having the heel of the hand in contact near the bridge serves that purpose. It’s okay to also touch the guitar body with the pinky but it shouldn’t be fixed, just lightly brushing and moving where the hand goes.

What a great improve, all over the neck with precision. It’s a demonstration of a very skilful player. Especially love the runs at 2:48. This is definitely one of the submissions to learn from.

May 2, 2022 at 9:13 pm #307635
Well I did look for a little while, but I honestly couldn’t say I saw any hesitation, it all looked and sounded fluid and smooth.
I soon found I was just listening and thoroughly enjoying your playing, you appeared to be full of new ideas and how to play them, right to the point where you faded away!
I particularly liked that little “double stoppy” passage at the 1:30 mark, 4ths I’d guess?Hope everyone recovers well soon.
-
May 2, 2022 at 9:26 pm #307636
Thanks, Andy. Yes, they’re 4ths but done over the top of the E shaped A chord sliding to the A shaped A chord sliding to the root A on the B string. It’s a great major pentatonic lick. Learned that one from a post by Alberto Gunz, a former member.

Brilliantly beautiful blistering BB box lesson, John! Your mastery of the entire fret board, and knowing when to go major or minor, is amazing!!! This was such a feel good exhilarating and pacy performance of which BB himself would be proud!
Hope your in-laws recover from Covid very soon, and hope that you are clear of it. There must be something about Covid and this lesson: I played a slow version of this lesson for the October 2021 challenge, while suffering with Covid. I have played it again this month… better go and have a test!
Once again, beautifully played! Thanks for posting it. 😎🎸

Nice submission, John. For me it was your personal best submission so far. Imaginative runs on the fretboard and a matching sound. I particularly like that it didn’t sound rehearsed; played more freely.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.
